Walk 50 Miles in January 2026

I'm walking 50 Miles in January for Dementia UK

This January, I'm walking 50 Miles and raising funds to help ensure no family faces dementia alone. I'm taking on the challenge for Dementia UK, the specialist dementia nursing charity, and would be grateful for your support.

Your donation, big or small, makes a difference. £33 could fund a new dementia specialist Admiral Nurse to spend an hour helping a family in the community, offering practical solutions and emotional support to cope with their loved one’s distressed behaviour.

Thank you!

My Updates

My wee walking companion

Monday 12th Jan
Today Casper and I got out this morning and walked for 2 miles, another one or two days this week with a big walk at the weekend should get us back on track to hit our 50mile for January. Happy Monday everyone

Wicked weather

Sunday 11th Jan
When I signed up to this challenge I thought,,, “yeah 50 miles in the month, piece of cake.” Second week in and I am behind my target, personally I really dislike walking in the rain, I think I would melt 🤣, but also I don’t have the right jacket. So this is a note to myself that I need to do more, the plan this week is to take Casper (my wee doggo) out for a good 1-2 miles a few days this week. Then top the week off with a bigger walk.

Thanks for reading, wish me luck x

New Year’s Day!

Sunday 4th Jan
Today Amanda, Beth and I went for a New Year’s Day walk round our local area, we clocked up 4 miles in the freezing cold.
January has brought an icy blast but it hasn’t stopped us getting out doors to walk in memory of our loved ones.
Today has made me realise that I am ill prepared for the Scottish winter weather and I really must look out some hats, scarfs and gloves to help keep me warm.

Whether you have experience of alzheimers or dementia please read along our journey, I hope to share some challenges we faced as a family and the hopes I have for others experiencing this cruel illness.

Supporting my uncle Jimmy in his final months was a privilege but it really brought to light the lack of support and knowledge of vascular dementia and showed how we have a lot more to learn in the supporting those with the disease. Did you know that in care homes with dementia care not all staff are trained in dementia care, this really surprised me.  These are figures I found in England
New Skills for Care data shows that only 29% of the care workforce in England have had any kind of dementia training. This impacts quality of care: the 2024 CQC State of Care report highlighted as one of its key areas of concern a lack of staff understanding of the specific needs of people with dementia - Alzheimer’s Society
