Dementia Broke Me
Saturday 17th Oct
Hello all.
Thank yiu for looking at, sharing my page and if you donated thank you so much.
Here's my story.
So I was and still am an unoaid carer for my mum who has dementia.
I also have one of my uncles in Cork with it and an aunt ilocal to me with dementia. I know at least two people who have close family members with it and one of my neighbours just loay her mum to this horrible disease.
I lived with my mum since my dad passed away many years ago and was there when she took a stroke and went on to become diagnosed with it in 2018, some six years after her stroke
Getting my mum diagnosed with dementia was an uohill battle. Then since she was diagnosed with mixed dementia but mostly vascular dementia in 2018 my game mode switched from getting her diagnosed to trying to slow her progress into this horrific disease down. Medications to slow it down and getting her to cimolete memory tasks like word searches etc. Then Covid 19 and all the lockdoens happened and that was like throwing petrol onto a fire. Not being able to get her out and about and seeing her family and friends reduced her life to four walls. Then in 2019 her sister was diagnosed with dementia as well as her.
Me being an only child had to rely on mums siblings to help out but this proved harder that yiu would think. Carera came in four times a day while I cared for my mum 24/7 and worked part time hours. Muma siblings couldn't help us out as they were dealing with their own lives and my other Aunts dementia diagnosis as she lived alone she had to be their priority.
After teo falls in Autumn and Winter 2021 that resulted in her needing surgery I placed my mum in a care home temporarily until a care package could be sourced to allow her to come home to a new home that I moved to that was a bungalow to reduce her falls risks. This placement eventually became permanent and it wasthe best decision I could of made for her. Little did I know that my mums sister could move into the same care centre that my mum was now living in. Some time after this happened i found out that one of my mums brothers was also diagnosed with dementia.
I am taking a one hundred km swim ondurinf November 2026 for dementia UK. I thank you for all donations big or small and if you can't donate please share my page.
