Splash against Dementia Nov 2025
Dementia is the UK’s leading cause of death, currently affecting more than 900,000 people. By 2040, that number is expected to soar to around 1.6 million.
My Dad was diagnosed with dementia just under a decade ago. Dementia is painful, not only for the individuals affected by it, but also their families. There’s a complex grief associated with caring for a loved one with dementia. Often, we find ourselves mourning the gradual loss of the person we once knew, comforted only by rare glimpses of their true self.
Over the years, I’ve watched helplessly as it has taken more than just his memories — but it has also taken his once-gregarious personality, charming wit, and independence.
Now, at end-stage, bed-bound and non-verbal, I’ve witnessed the full spectrum of emotions that he and so many others face in their battle with dementia: the frustration of once-simple tasks becoming impossible, the deep grief for lost memories, the fear of an uncertain future, and perhaps most heartbreaking of all - the overwhelming loneliness of being surrounded by loved ones yet being unable to recognise or communicate with them.
Despite how common dementia is, there is no cure and treatments remain limited. Yet research is advancing, and scientists are learning more and more about how dementia develops, and how we might prevent or slow its progression.
This November, in honour of my Dad, I’ll be taking part in a sponsored swim to raise money and awareness for Dementia UK. The funds raised will support groundbreaking research and vital services for families affected by dementia.
If my Dad knew I was attempting this, he'd laugh in my face, before cheering me on! Not sure what I've signed up for- but can't let the old man down now!
