I'm taking on the October Dog Walking Challenge

I’m walking 75 miles with my dog this October and raising funds for families affected by dementia. I would be grateful for your support.

An £8 donation could cover the telephone costs of two families seeking support through Dementia UK's free Helpline. £33 could fund an hour with a dementia specialist Admiral Nurse, helping a family with practical solutions and emotional support.

Thank you!

My mum has Alzheimer’s

Sunday 21st Sep
As today is National Alzheimer’s day, it seems apt to share this post and our October challenge.
In 2021 whilst we were still in the midst of the pandemic, our lovely mum started doing and saying things that evoked some concern.
As both my parents and myself had been shielding, our exposure to her changes in behaviour were minimal and as occurs in many cases been masked by my dad.
I remember clearly when my life as a child shattered, with my dad in hospital, we told my mum to drive to my house, a journey she’d done many times. It is only 3 roads and 3 turns to get here but she got lost.

We knew we had to seek help. Despite the pandemic, within a few months we received the devastating news that my mum had Alzheimer’s.
To anyone that knew my mum previously, knows that she never stopped talking and chatting to anyone and everyone,we used to say that she had a pause button on her shoulder to get her to stop.

These days, she struggles to get her words out and then it is generally the same thing on repeat. She used to love writing short stories and every year we’d receive a birthday poem This year on my birthday I sobbed as I saw the 3 words that she’d managed to scrawl in my card.
When my dad took seriously ill in 2023, we were left with no choice but for mum to enter care at Heathlands where she still is today, Thankfully,  she is well looked after and on the whole as happy and well as can be.
For us though, having to watch a parent’s decline and mourn them whilst they’re still breathing over such a prolonged period is not something I would wish on anyone.
October is a significant month for us, in 2023 when life got overwhelming and I felt like I was hitting rock bottom, we spontaneously got a dog.
Cookie was the tonic we all needed and an absolute lifesaver. He brings us unconditional love, forces us out of the house and together with Jay brings us a lot of love and laughter.
it is for this reason that this October we are taking on Dementia UK’s 75 mile October Dog Walking Challenge.
Dementia Uk exists to help families facing dementia. It is not a journey any family can face on their own and it is through challenges like this that they can continue to help families like ours navigate such a devastating chapter.
Team Cohen and Cookie would appreciate any support you can give and we look forward to updating you throughout October.
