I'm doing The 36 Hole Challenge for Dementia UK
I’m taking on The 36 Hole Challenge and raising funds so that families affected by dementia get the specialist help and advice they need. I would be grateful for your support.
£21 could pay for the telephone costs of five families calling our free Helpline whenever they need support.
£33 could fund an hour with a dementia specialist Admiral Nurse, helping a family with practical solutions and emotional support.
Thank you!

Friday 14th AugThe Effects of Dementia on People in the UK
Dementia is a progressive condition that affects the brain, causing problems with memory, thinking, communication, understanding and decision-making. It is not a normal part of ageing and can have a profound effect not only on the person diagnosed but also on their family, friends and wider community. There are currently around one million people living with dementia in the UK, and this figure is expected to rise to approximately 1.4 million by 2040. (Alzheimer’s Society)
For the individual, dementia can gradually reduce their ability to manage everyday activities independently. In the early stages, someone may struggle to remember appointments, conversations or familiar names. As the condition progresses, they may experience confusion, difficulties communicating, changes in personality and problems with everyday tasks such as shopping, cooking, managing money or taking medication. Eventually, many people require significant levels of care and support.
Dementia can also have a major emotional impact. People may experience frustration, anxiety, embarrassment, isolation and loss of confidence as they become aware that they are struggling with things they previously found easy. The progression of the condition can also affect relationships, as family members may find it difficult to adjust to changes in the person’s behaviour and abilities.
The impact on carers can be equally significant. Around 700,000 people in the UK provide unpaid care for someone with dementia. Recent research found that 43% of carers said they had reached breaking point and felt unable to cope, while 56% said caring had negatively affected their mental health. (Alzheimer’s Society)
There is also a considerable financial and social impact. Dementia is estimated to cost the UK economy around £42 billion a year, with the majority of the financial burden falling on people with dementia and their families. As dementia becomes more severe, individuals are more likely to require social care, residential care or nursing care. (Alzheimer’s Society)
Dementia also places considerable pressure on the NHS and social care services. People living with dementia can require more GP appointments, hospital treatment and community support. Early diagnosis is therefore important because it can allow people and their families to plan for the future, access appropriate support and make important decisions while the person is still able to participate fully.
Overall, dementia affects far more than memory. It can influence a person’s independence, relationships, emotional wellbeing, finances and quality of life. It also places significant demands on families, carers and public services. With the number of people affected expected to increase, providing early diagnosis, appropriate care and better support for families will remain an important challenge for the UK.
