When Memories Fade, Love Remains 💙
Friday 28th Aug💙I’m Walking 30 miles for Dementia
Some of you may or may not know this, but dementia has been a part of my life for many years. It’s something I really struggle to talk about because of the emotions it triggers.
My aunt was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease 8 years ago, and around 7 months ago, my mum was diagnosed with vascular dementia.
Somehow, dementia has continued to weave its way through my life. It has deeply affected my love ones, but also something I see every day through my work as a manager supporting residents living with dementia.
Dementia is cruel. It slowly takes pieces of someone away while you stand beside them and watch. You watch someone you love forget names, memories, places, conversations and, eventually, parts of who they are. And in the process, you can feel like you are losing a part of yourself too.
But behind every diagnosis is a person. A mother. An aunt. A father. A grandparent. A friend. Someone with a lifetime of memories, stories and people who love them.
That is why I have decided to take part in a Walk for Dementia.
I’m walking for my mum.
I’m walking for my aunt.
I’m walking for every person living with dementia.
And I’m walking for the families and carers who quietly carry the weight of it every single day.
