I'm walking 62 Miles in October

I’m walking 62 Miles in October and raising funds so that families affected by dementia get the specialist help and advice they need. I would be grateful for your support.

An £10 donation can cover the telephone costs of two families seeking support through Dementia UK's free Helpline. £33 could fund an hour with a dementia specialist Admiral Nurse, helping a family with practical solutions and emotional support.

Thank you!

Not giving up

Thursday 23rd Oct
I am back to walking and will try my utmost best to achieve the target. I have just got back from a longish walk.. Feels longer than it should because of battling with winds and cold. Sometimes the road ahead with my mum feels like this... Long, cold and dark. At times the journey of caring for mum feels like waking into a cold headwind where everything takes more effort than it should.
The roads were covered with leaves that had fallen off... These leaves were once the reason for a beautiful landscape and even after they have lost their charm and beauty they haven't stopped being useful... By covering the lawns and the borders they continue to protect them from the frost and cold that is about to set in.
Just a thought that may be I don't want to cheat my garden of the fallen leaves... They are there to protect and to ensure that when spring comes these trees can bloom and bring colours back in our lives.
Just a thought that maybe this is how it is with the challenges of dementia. Maybe those difficult days, those moments that feel like a loss of charm and beauty aren't there to be swept away entirely. Perhaps they become a layer of protective wisdom for the soul, teaching us patience enduring love and resilience. They are the necessary mulch. They are there to protect the 'roots' of our loved ones and ourselves—our memories, our connection, our love—to ensure that when spring comes, we can still bloom and bring colours back into our lives.

Reflections

Wednesday 8th Oct

Walking in the evening, after it's dark and cold, is definitely not my usual routine. But now I have to. This 62-mile commitment is driven by a desire to help in the very small way I can.

When I walk, I try to recall memories of my mum before she was overpowered by dementia. Some are starting to feel vague—a struggle to hold onto, perhaps a collateral damage of the illness. But her current situation, her struggles, and my own initial difficulty in knowing how to respond are still starkly clear in my head.

That's why every step is vital. It's about helping Dementia UK provide the essential support and awareness so that other families don't have to face the confusion and preventable struggles that come from simply not knowing how to respond.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has already donated—I'm so incredibly grateful.

I've covered 8 miles so far, with 54 more to go! If you'd like to support this mission and help a family get the expert guidance they need, you can donate right here on my page. Please watch this space for more updates!
