November Swim Challenge

I'm taking part in the November Swim Challenge

I’m taking part in the November Swim Challenge for Dementia UK and raising funds for families affected by dementia. I would be grateful for your support.

£33 could fund an hour with a dementia specialist Admiral Nurse, helping a family with practical solutions and emotional support.

Thank you!

First practise

Wednesday 8th Oct
I took to the water for my first practice swim last night.
I started at 7:15pm and finished at 8:50pm, this is the longest I've spent in the pool in a long time and it was great, but also challenging!
I would have carried on until 9pm when the pool closed but I had to stop due to cramps in my legs.
I worked on my strokes and pacing, getting a feel for the water again and I worked on my breath control, making it just above half way across the pool on one breath.
When I was younger I could easily make it the whole 25 metres on one breath. That's now a personal goal of mine, to achieve a full length on a single breath!
My whole body aches today so I'll be resting and back in the pool later this week.

Returning to the water

Tuesday 7th Oct
I started swimming, as many people do, from a very young age.
As I grew, swimming remained a huge part of my life. Eventually I began to swim for Rotherham Metro, training hard and racing hard, even competing in competitions at Ponds Forge and abroad.

I moved away from swimming as I became a teen and stopped for many many years.

Now, a 33 year old mother of two, getting my children in to swimming, I realised how much I've missed being in the water. Missed swimming, the way the world goes quiet and peaceful when submerged and the weightlessness.

This challenge is an opportunity to achieve something special for people and feels like a homecoming for me after so long away.
