I'm walking 62 miles in May

I’m walking 62 miles in May and raising funds so that families affected by dementia get the specialist help and advice they need. I would be grateful for your support.

An £8 donation can cover the telephone costs of two families seeking support through Dementia UK's free Helpline. £33 could fund an hour with a dementia specialist Admiral Nurse, helping a family with practical solutions and emotional support.

Thank you!

My Updates

June 22nd - 22 days late - task completed

Sunday 22nd Jun
My Dementia UK May 25 - 62 mile challenge update.

Today a full 22 days late I completed the 62 mile challenge.

I signed up for this straight after I had my total knee replacement to give me a target to start walking again.

I am emensily proud to have completed the task albeit a little later than others.

It was very difficult for me as knee replacements are difficult to get over and I could only walk a mile a day at best and when my knee swelled up after the walk I had to rest for a few days prior to starting g again.

To help I used the swimming pool at David Lloyd Milton Keynes to complete some of the distance which was easier for my knee.

I am totally humbled by the support I have received from my friends, family and work colleagues past and present and in total thanks to all of you we have raised £3105 which makes me the second most sponcered person in the country.

Today I received a lovely card from Dementia UK that I attach the words in the card make all the effort worthwhile

Thank you all so very much I cannot say this enough.

Now all I need to do is to get rid of the knee pain and stiffness which will then allow me to sleep at night and I will consider myself fully recovered.

16th June 25

Monday 16th Jun
Have not walked much over the past week as giving my knee time the mend without the walking, but walked around the cricket pitch this evening, Knee was not as stiff when I started the walk but stiffened up by the time I finished, feels a little better than it did last week still have pain and knee clicks on every step, the swelling has reduced but still there, hopefully it will not increase this week. Have a new compressive knee sleeve that is heated which I will use now back home. I expect to complete the charity walk challenge this week and achieve the Dementia UK 62 miles that everyone else completed in May 25. I will be about 20 to 22 days late but will make it following my total knee replacement that I had mid March 25.

I would like to thank everyone that has sponsored me making me the second most sponsored person in the UK with a total of £3,105 at the time of writing this. There is still time if you would like to contribute see link below

10th June 25 - Day 32 plus 10 days

Tuesday 10th Jun
Walked the back lake of Willen wearing a knee brace - was a slow walk but I made it - The brace seems to reduce the stiffness but knee is still painful - I had a little giggle to myself when a man with one leg on crutches overtook me. Just need knee to settle down now and stiffness and pain to disappear and I will be there. Only thing I will need to get used to is the new knee clicking on every foot step, will do the resistance band exercises now to improve the quad muscles, I will complete the 62 mile challenge but may be 3 weeks later than plannned

9th June 25 - Fay 31 plus 9

Monday 9th Jun
Did not walk over the weekend as Knee stiff and painful, the relaxing did not improve the situation so walked around the cricket pitch this morning with Harvey. Knee super stiff and painful and clicks every step. The surgeon on Friday was happy with the knee scar and the x Ray showed all in order. The pain and stiffness will receded over time and strengthening the muscles around the knee is required to reduce stiffness. Just want to be better and to be able to sleep, but positively I’m about better than a month ago so on the right path. Trying to remain positive.

Dementia May charity walk update

Day 31 + 5

Not walked for a few days as one has been swollen, although a little swollen still I went for a walk around the cricket pitch, knee very stiff and painful but walked slowly. Knee clicks every step and slow painful when bending knee. This must improve shortly, the pain and stiffness is sending around the bend. I have my 12 week post op review with surgeon tomorrow in London and hopefully will feel a little better then than I do now. Will use ice machine and then go to the pool a little later if my knee is up for it

Will complete the 62 miles - 48 miles down 14 miles to go

June 1st

Sunday 1st Jun
Today I have 16 miles to complete of the 62 miles so positively I have completed 46 miles during May 25 whist recovering from  a total knee replacement which I am very happy with as at the start of May I could not see me getting anywhere near the 62 mile target. I will complete the task but probably a few weeks later than required. I would like to thank all of you for sponsoring  me and at the time of writing this adds up to £3066 which is amazing. All I can do is thank you all from the bottom of my heart in supporting Dementia UK would do such fantastic work. Wishing you all a peaceful Sunday afternoon.

Day 31 + 1

Sunday 1st Jun
Dementia UK - May Charity walk

Day 31 +1

Well I knew I would not achieve the required 62 miles walked in the month of May due to my knee replacement but will complete the task a few weeks later hopefully.

Did not walk yesterday as had very little sleep on Friday night so spend Saturday snoozing in the sofa and knee was feeling stiff and painful. So when I awoke today was determined to walk and thought a longer walk than a mile just might assist in relieving the stiffness. So walked Caldecotte lake with Janice Abrey Victoria Knott and Greg Baker with Harvey the dog and Annabelle our granddaughter. Knee was very stiff and tightened during the walk so much so that I found it difficult to bend knee to get into the car. Knee now swollen so it’s the ice machine for me this afternoon. Knee has not been this tight and painful so I’m a little worried as do not know why it is happening.

I’m a little frustrated as want to get back to normal but this recovery is two steps forward and 3 steps back.

There is still time for you to sponsor me to complete the walk, no matter how small the donation it all adds up.

I attach the link to my charity walk page and thank you in advance for your donations

Day 19

Tuesday 20th May
Today a 1 mile walk only completed this afternoon .
Thid  morning attended Gym with PT my knee was super stiff and painful and a little swelling  so only walked over weekend. Following the gym this morning spent 90 minutes on ice machine and this afternoon fell asleep on sofa as sleep not great last night and over weekend.
Walked in afternoon and Knee after walk felt fat and stiff and painful.  Every step taken the tight knee clicks - I don’t know what I have to do to get the pain and stiffness to go, will continue with pain killers and hope the knee does not swell up later.

Day 18

Sunday 18th May
Another 1 mile walk only as knee very tight and a little swollen and painful slept for 4 1/2 hours last night waking up twice and taking pain killers for knee. Taking it easy today as have a PT session at gym and 10-30 in morning and want the knee to be the best it can be.

Day 17

Saturday 17th May
Did not sleep well last night, Only slept from 3-30 to 6-15 but spent most of the day lying on bed doing leg exercises, falsed myself to walk around the cricket pitch late afternoon  and did not go to the gym. Knee so tight and painful so spent time on ice machine and relaxing praying that the stiffener and pain leaves me sporty.

Day 14

Wednesday 14th May
Trying to extend the distance of walking without swelling up the knee more than 1 mile ad I have been completing when able, so  today  I braved a walk around Willen back lake which I know is more than a mile. After completing the walk the things I have learnt today are
1. My  new knee does not like changes in level of paths
2. Walking  up slopes is very painful.

walked slowly trying to walk without a limp and had many bench stops during the walk.  The weather was lovely and after the walk  my right knee feels tight as a drum and painful to the inside.  - When I got hime it was an hour on the ice machine and praying the knee does not swell up so I can go again tomorrow.

Prior to the knee op I could easily walk 5 miles around both lakes do this  is my target so when can walk that distance without pain, stiffness and swelling  I will be fully recovered. Can not wait for that day.

Day 13

Wednesday 14th May
Although I am attending David Lloyd Milton Keynes gym to strengthen muscles above, around and below the Knee instead of walking which at the moment makes the knee swell. I walked this morning for about a mile slowly.

Knee still painful and very stiff and clicked every step. Used ice machine after the walk and in alertly evening attended gym to strengthen the muscles around the knee.

Slept better after this but still woke 3 times mid night, 2 and 5 am

I will achieve the 62 miles but will take me a little longer due to my knee issues.

For all my friends that have Sponcered me - Thank you so so much.

If you would like to help me hit my fund rasiing target of £2,200 there is still time please see link below for direction on how to donate - Any donation no matter how small would really be appreciated

Day 12

Wednesday 14th May
No walking yesterday as knee swollen, so yesterday went to David Lloyd Milton Keynes and worked with a PT in the gym to strengthen muscles above, around and below the Knee instead of walking which at the moment makes the knee swell.

Knee still painful and very stiff and clicked every step. Used ice machine in morning and after gym yesterday and this morning the knee was not as swollen which is a step in the right direction.

Will use gym again today and maybe walk again tomorrow.

I will achieve the 62 miles but will take me a little longer due to my knee issues.

For all my friends that have Sponcered me - Thank you so so much.

If you would like to help me hit my fund rasiing target of £2,000 there is still time please see link below for direction on how to donate - Any donation no matter how small would really be appreciated

Day 10

Wednesday 14th May

No walking yesterday  as knee swollen, so today up and on ice machine and then a super slow walk trying to increase distance to 2 miles. Walked with Jan and Harvey and sat on many benches on the way - Want to do more increase the walk and not to have swelling to the knee. Knee was painful and very stiff on the walk and clicked every step. Now home on ice machine hoping that the knee does not swell, however knee quite painful and stiff - Fingers crossed.

For all my friends that have Sponcered me - Thank you so much. If you would like to help me hit my fund rasiing target of £2,009 please see link below:

Day 9

Wednesday 14th May
Dementia UK May 25 Charity walk following total knee replacement.

Day 9

As knee swollen from the walking yesterday the Physcio has advised I listen to my knee and when swollen rest up the next day and use ice machine. So no walking today - Hopefully the swelling would have reduced by tomorrow morning to enable me to go again. Today is 8 weeks post operation so surely I will turn the corner shortly, Inam still have issues with sleeping due to knee pain and have stiffness and swelling.

I would like to thank for all tou that have sponsored me so far and if you have not sponsored me and would like to the the link to Dementia UK fantastic charity is indicated below;

Thanking you all in advance

Day 8

Thursday 8th May
After early Physcio appointment and not doing any walking yesterday as knee swollen I walked a mile straight after physio appointment and a little later walked a few lengths of pool at David Llyod and completed new load bearing knee exercises in the pool. I will reach target of 62 miles but may take a little longer than the Month of May 24 - The condition of my knee with dictate that. Little by little get back but it’s a slow recovery

Day 6 - Walking in Swimming pool as knee swollen - But that’s ok isn’t it?

Tuesday 6th May
Dementia UK May 25 Charity walk following total knee replacement.

Day 6

Another night of broken sleep as knee swollen from the walking over the weekend, Spent hours on the ice machine during the day and decided that walking in a swimming pool may be easier on my knee so I walked approx 62 lengths of the pool at David Lloyd Milton Keynes with phone around my neck in a water pool pouch. To be honest after 20 lengths knee was so sore so I started walking backwards and hopping to give knee a rest - It does not matter how you achieve the distance as long as you do right?

Anyway knee seemed to loosen up a bit towards the end which is a bonus, 7 weeks post knee replacement now surely must turn the corner soon and not have the stiffness, pain and swelling.

Determined to recover and also reach the walking target which may take me a little longer than one month

Thank you for all of those that have sponsored me so far, if you would like to support me and a fantastic charity see link below

Thanking you all in advance

Day 3 - 1 mile walk

Saturday 3rd May
Walked 1 mile this afternoon as resting knee in bed all morning. knee very stiff as if there 100 elastic bands around it. Janice walked with me as well as Harvey the Dog. Had to sit on bench half way around as knee painful and sore. My knee clicks every step. When I got home the knee was hot to the touch and painful - So ice machine primed and realty - Thanks to Janice and now I’m on ice machine which is providing relief and hopefully keeping further swelling away.

Day 2 - 1 mile walk of the 62 mile requirement

Friday 2nd May
Today I spend 90 minutes with knee on ice machine  ahead of the 1 mile walk, although the knee very stiff and clicking on every step I managed to complete the walk for the first time without stopping and sitting down on benches. Back home now and on ice machine hoping the knee does not swell so I can go again tomorrow. I would like to thank each and everyone of you that have donated  and if anyone would like to donate no matter how small will make a big difference see link below

Thanking you all in advance ❤️❤️❤️❤️

First walk of 1 mile

Thursday 1st May
So the challenge begins - I walk 1 mile around cricket pitch that’s close to home, Due to recently having knee replacement had to stop and sit down twice and at the end of it knee painful so straight on the ice machine to calm the knee down, I will see what it is like later this afternoon and if not swollen more than this morning may walk I the swimming pool and Milton Keynes David Lloyd.

The start of May 62 mike walking challenge

Thursday 1st May
Good morning, A little fearful as I’m getting over total knee replacement surgery and knee is swollen and stiff so this is a real challenge to me - I will try to walk a mile around the local cricket pitch today and maybe walk some lengths in the local David Lloyd swimming pool - Wish me luck.

By the way I would like to thank all of you that have been so generous sponsoring me - Tjis is very much appreciated

Wishing you all the most fantastic day, and remember there is always someone worse off than you
