I'm walking 62 miles in May

I’m walking 62 miles in May and raising funds so that families affected by dementia get the specialist help and advice they need. I would be grateful for your support.

An £8 donation can cover the telephone costs of two families seeking support through Dementia UK's free Helpline. £33 could fund an hour with a dementia specialist Admiral Nurse, helping a family with practical solutions and emotional support.

Thank you!

Day 5 - Wooler to The Holy Isle (Lindisfarne)

Sunday 25th May
This was described as an “easy day” however we think the guidebook summary description  may have been written  from someone’s living room 😂 30km and over 450m elevation, with the final 3km over sand made it quite a full on day in the end. The weather was a little muggy as we set off and we actually had to get our rain gear out late morning for 30 minutes, then once again the sun came out for the rest of the day.  We paid a quick visit to St Cuthbert’s Cave where we got a real sense of what it must have been like for St Cuthbert’s followers trying to protect his body as they fled Lindisfarne. For most of the rest of the day we could see the sea, which gave us encouragement towards the coast. Having crossed the main East Coast train line (a unique, but very safe experience ) we took our boots off, tied them to our bags and set out across the sand to the Holy Isle (low tide of course!!). Walking 3km across the sand was an amazing experience. Finishing in Lindisfarne village was special - it felt very spiritual for lots of reasons.
Finally, for those of you who  have sponsored me, I can’t describe how much it has meant - thank you so much for your kindness and generosity.

Day 4 - Yetholm to Wooler

Sunday 25th May
This was described as a “strenuous” day in the guide book and it lived up to expectations with over 700m of elevation. Leaving Yetholm we headed back up into the Cheviots for most of the day, with spectacular views back over our route. We walked many miles through the upland heather, seeing Curlew, Snipe, Lark, Yellowhammer, Lapwing and of course Grouse - an amazing day. After a picnic lunch beside a babbling brook we then slowly but surely descended down into Wooler through forest and farmland. Weather was very kind again.

Day 3 - Jedburgh to Yetholm

Friday 23rd May
Another beautiful day weather wise - I don’t know what condition we would have been in today if it was wet & muddy!!! Long day at just over 18 miles. Our morning was spent walking over undulating ground, across farmland and through huge barley fields swaying in the breeze. Lunch at the newly opened Morebattle community pub, and up some steep climbs into the Cheviot hills, with some gorgeous 360 degree views from the summits. We walked over 3 peaks and then a steep descend and along the river into Yetholm which is also
one end of the Pennine  Way which I understand is a mere 206 mile hike and takes around 19 days!!!! Probably the longest days hike I ever complete with over 2,000 feet of elevation. It was an absolute  joy though……

Day 2 - St Boswell to Jedburgh

Thursday 22nd May
Another fantastic day weather wise, with a mix of walking through forest and open countryside following the Tweed and later in the day the river Teviot - both amazing rivers. Salmon were jumping and we enjoyed several serenades from Redstarts and Mickel Thrushes through the day. We followed a largely covered over ancient Roman Road during the day, so we’re cutting a path to Jedburgh in a very straight line on the map, but a very wiggly line on the ground 😂

Day 1 complete

Wednesday 21st May
After a hilly start in Melrose, we enjoyed a fantastic day walking through the Borders countryside. The conservation village of Bowden was a hidden gem. Weather was beautiful all day. Onto Jedburgh today, so around 12 miles. No blisters 😆
