I'm walking 62 Miles in October
I’m walking 62 Miles in October and raising funds so that families affected by dementia get the specialist help and advice they need. I would be grateful for your support.
An £10 donation can cover the telephone costs of two families seeking support through Dementia UK's free Helpline. £33 could fund an hour with a dementia specialist Admiral Nurse, helping a family with practical solutions and emotional support.
Thank you!

Remembering my Grandad
Sunday 12th OctI’m already at 49 miles! I’m so grateful to everyone who’s sponsored me so far and helped me get close to my fundraising target.
When out walking for this challenge, I've been remembering my lovely granddad. He was a true gentle giant. I’ll always remember him sitting on a stool in our garage with a smile on his face and a cigarette in hand, or sitting in his armchair shouting “Penalty!” at the TV every time Spurs were on — whether they were anywhere near the penalty box or not! He loved his football and loved growing vegetables in his garden back in Basildon. I don't recall him talking much, but he always seemed pretty happy and content.
He also had an incredible story. He fought at Dunkirk during the Second World War, and my Nanny was even told he hadn’t survived. Miraculously, he did, and came home with shrapnel still lodged in his brain. That part of his story always fascinated me and I went on to study more about Dunkirk at college because of it.
Sadly, in his later years, he developed Alzheimer’s disease. It's such a cruel and devastating condition that slowly took away his memories and independence. Watching that happen to someone was heartbreaking. I remember him going for 'walkabouts' around the town, in a totally confused state. My mum was absolutely incredible dealing with it all.
Every step I take this month is for my Grandad and for everyone affected by dementia. 💙
