I'm swimming to raise money for Dementia Research

Many of you will know that my Dad (pictured) suffers with dementia. He's in a wonderful care home but his later years have been stripped from him and from us by this cruel disease. I know so many people who have had, or are still struggling with, the same experience. I’m therefore taking part in the November Swim Challenge for Dementia UK and raising funds for families affected by dementia. I would be grateful for your support.

£19 could pay for the telephone costs of five families calling the free Helpline whenever they need support. £33 could fund an hour with a dementia specialist Admiral Nurse, helping a family with practical solutions and emotional support.

Thank you! From Helen & Godfrey

10km target hit but keeping going

Wednesday 26th Nov
On honour of the generous donations I have received it only seems right & proper to put a bit more effort in and keep going to the end of November. Hopefully I'll hit the higher target of 15km

19th Nov 10.2km swum overall!! 1.17 km today

Wednesday 19th Nov
10.2km swum but I'll keep going

12th November at least 975m swum

Wednesday 12th Nov
I counted two more lengths - 1025m but hey what's 50m between fundraisers

11th Nov another 1025m added

Tuesday 11th Nov

7th Nov 1000m added

Friday 7th Nov
Paula can be my witness for today!

6th Nov: 1000m added!

Thursday 6th Nov
Pushed a bit harder this morning, the pool was quiet so I hit the KM !

5th Nov: 975m added

Wednesday 5th Nov
Official total now 1825m based on my Chinese smartwatch. Unofficial total based an counting lengths 1900m

Day 1 4th Nov either 850m or 925m!

Tuesday 4th Nov
Today day 1: my watch logged 34 lengths = 850m. I counted 37 lengths, and seeing as I entered the pool at one end and climbed out at the other, I must have covered an odd number of laps 😜. Anyway, this gives me a benchmark for days when my watch might let me down altogether (it sometimes does - you get what you pay for 😳). I'm doing at least 850m in 30 minutes = 28.3m a minute.

The tracker seems to be working 💪

Friday 17th Oct
Tried it twice and although a bit fiddly, it seems accurate ☺️

Smartwatch arrived!

Sunday 12th Oct
Hoping it's actually waterproof - I'll test it out next week!

Well done Helen. It’s a terrible disease that has a terrible outcome. Everyone should donate as it’s future proofing. We are all living longer and the unfortunate reality is the dementia is on the horizon for many of us.
