I'm walking 124 miles in May

I’m walking  at least 124 miles in May and raising funds so that families affected by dementia get the specialist help and advice they need. I would be grateful for your support.

Like many people who take on fundraising challenges, this cause has a personal meaning to me as my Dad suffers from Dementia.  However, I don't want go into any details about his struggles, as for me that is not the focus of this fundraising campaign by Dementia UK.

I live nearly 500 miles away from my Dad, so I only get to see him now and again. However, he is lucky that he has my step-brother and step-sister in his life every day, doing whatever needs doing for him.

When I visit, I see how difficult it is for George and Karen, but despite this they care for him day after day without complaint, and it is only because they are there for him that he is able to live in his own home.

So when I saw this fundraising challenge, it appealed to me in two ways. Firstly, the money is desperately needed to give carers the help and support they themselves need, and secondly by committing to walking every day for a month, it feels like an appropriate gesture to those who have to commit to caring every day, no matter what else is going on in their life.

I am 11 days in now, and since May 1st my life has been non-stop with all kinds of things going on and on some of those days I will have walked several miles just from being on my feet all day.

However, I am purposely doing  my daily walk on top of everything else, no matter what, even if I have already walked 10 miles that day and even if I can't get round to it until the evening.   It is just a small token of appreciation for all the carers, George and Karen included, who have no choice but to find the time, every day, no matter what.

Last day walk

Saturday 31st May

Did it!

Saturday 31st May
Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire was the setting for day 31 of 31 of my walking challenge, raising funds for DementiaUK and hopefully some awareness of the vital work they do in helping those who help and care for loved ones living with dementia in the UK.
It was a warm, breezy day with decent cloud cover, and I had the most enjoyable four hours, covering 9 miles around the Fountains Abbey estate as well as the Studley Royal deer park.
Me and Rachel B love this place, one of our favourite spots in the world, so it was fitting to finish the challenge here. Shame you couldn't join me today, Mrs B!

Finally a huge thank you to everyone who has donated, either through my findraising page or directly with Dementia UK, your support and generosity means the world, and every penny makes a difference. Thank you! 🫶

Yorkshire miles

Thursday 29th May
Arrived in Yorkshire yesterday and without any further ado I was out getting some Yorkshire miles in my legs!
A few miles round the local villages last night followed by a full day pounding the Leeds city centre streets today!
Two big days to go....

At Sranndabhal's summit

Monday 26th May

62 becomes 124!

Monday 26th May
Six days to go, and for the final push I have doubled my overall walking target to 124 miles. Come on legs, you can do it!
I didn't manage a hill on Saturday due to the ever present low cloud, but yesterday was much brighter so I headed up Sranndabhal, located between Leverburgh and Rodel, overlooking Strond and Borrisdale with spectacular views across the Sound of Harris.  It was a bit windy to say the least!
At 211m it's not the highest hill in the area, but it is a beauty!

Rodel

Friday 23rd May
At the historic St Clements Church in Rodel. With actual weather at last!

Rain!

Friday 23rd May
After only managing a two mile circuit around Stornoway yesterday evening I am back on home turf now for today's walk, and for the first time in what seems like forever, it is raining!
So, time to don the waterproof jacket and head out. No idea which way I'll go yet, I'll let my legs decide!
Planning a bigger walk again tomorrow, maybe one of the local hills, so watch this space.

Renish Point

Wednesday 21st May
At the most southerly point in 'mainland' Harris & Lewis

First major walk

Wednesday 21st May
Well, three weeks in and today, at last I will be getting my hiking boots on and getting some proper miles in my legs!
So far I have been able to fit in a walk each day of between 2 and 6 miles, mostly around Leverburgh, occasionally up to Strond and Borrisdale and last Saturday I was in Stornoway, so I took time out to walk round the castle grounds. Very nice, too, especially in the warm sunshine 😎.
Today, however it is time to go a bit 'off piste'. I'll be heading from the door up to Borrisdale and then out to Renish Point, on the most southerly headland in Harris. I'll have my binoculars with me as this is a great spot for seeing marine life. There and back will be roughly 10 miles, but the ground will be dry and firm with all this dry warm weather we are having, so it promises to be a great walk!
