I'm walking 124 miles in May
I’m walking at least 124 miles in May and raising funds so that families affected by dementia get the specialist help and advice they need. I would be grateful for your support.
Like many people who take on fundraising challenges, this cause has a personal meaning to me as my Dad suffers from Dementia. However, I don't want go into any details about his struggles, as for me that is not the focus of this fundraising campaign by Dementia UK.
I live nearly 500 miles away from my Dad, so I only get to see him now and again. However, he is lucky that he has my step-brother and step-sister in his life every day, doing whatever needs doing for him.
When I visit, I see how difficult it is for George and Karen, but despite this they care for him day after day without complaint, and it is only because they are there for him that he is able to live in his own home.
So when I saw this fundraising challenge, it appealed to me in two ways. Firstly, the money is desperately needed to give carers the help and support they themselves need, and secondly by committing to walking every day for a month, it feels like an appropriate gesture to those who have to commit to caring every day, no matter what else is going on in their life.
I am 11 days in now, and since May 1st my life has been non-stop with all kinds of things going on and on some of those days I will have walked several miles just from being on my feet all day.
However, I am purposely doing my daily walk on top of everything else, no matter what, even if I have already walked 10 miles that day and even if I can't get round to it until the evening. It is just a small token of appreciation for all the carers, George and Karen included, who have no choice but to find the time, every day, no matter what.
