I'm taking on Fans vs Dementia
During the course of 90 minutes, 30 people in the UK will develop dementia.
I’m taking on Fans vs Dementia and raising funds so that families affected by dementia get the specialist help and advice they need. I would be grateful for your support.
£19 could pay for the telephone costs of five families calling our free Helpline whenever they need support.
£33 could fund an hour with a dementia specialist Admiral Nurse, helping a family with practical solutions and emotional support.
Thank you!

⚽ Football Fans vs Dementia: Protecting the Game We Love
Sunday 31st AugFootball isn’t just a sport—it’s a passion, a culture, and a community that unites millions around the world. From the roar of the crowd to the unforgettable goals etched into history, it gives us memories we carry for life. But for many players, those memories are at risk of fading.
In recent years, concerns about dementia among footballers—especially linked to repeated heading of the ball and head injuries—have sparked difficult but necessary conversations. Fans everywhere are asking: how can we protect players without losing the heart of the game?
Why Dementia Matters in Football
Studies have shown that former professional players may be at a higher risk of developing dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases compared to the general population. Legendary names we grew up cheering for are now facing the harsh reality of memory loss, confusion, and the daily challenges of dementia.
For fans, it’s heartbreaking. These players gave us joy, lifted trophies, and inspired generations. Now, the game must give something back: care, protection, and change.
What’s Being Done
- Rule Changes: Youth football in some countries has already restricted heading in training. Professional leagues are trialing similar guidelines.
- Better Awareness: Clubs, associations, and fan groups are raising awareness about the risks, making dementia part of the wider football conversation.
- Support for Players: Charities and ex-player associations are stepping up to provide care and financial support for those affected.
The Role of Fans
Fans are the heartbeat of football—and we can make a difference:
- Support Campaigns: Get behind initiatives raising money for dementia research and player care.
- Demand Change: Encourage clubs and governing bodies to prioritize player safety, without diluting the magic of the game.
- Show Compassion: Celebrate our heroes not only for what they did on the pitch, but for the courage they show off it.
Protecting the Future of Football
The truth is, football must evolve to safeguard the health of those who make it possible. Protecting players from dementia isn’t about taking away from the sport—it’s about ensuring its future.
Because in the end, the most important memories football gives us shouldn’t be the ones it takes away.
