Walk 50 Miles in January 2026

I'm walking 50 Miles in January for Dementia UK

This January, I'm walking 50 Miles and raising funds to help ensure no family faces dementia alone. I'm taking on the challenge for Dementia UK, the specialist dementia nursing charity, and would be grateful for your support.

It’s 10 years since I lost my dad to dementia and as the years have passed and continue , so many friends and family are also losing their loved ones to this disease.

Health hasn’t been on my side recently so this really is a challenge for me, particularly during the month of January where adverse weather and dark nights can take their toll.

Your donation, no matter how big or small is important to me and makes a huge difference. £33 could fund a new dementia specialist Admiral Nurse to spend an hour helping a family in the community, offering practical solutions and emotional support to cope with their loved one’s distressed behaviour.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking time to read my story.

Dementia UK Walk 50 Miles in January

Well folks, after a rocky few days I’ve completed the 50 mile Challenge.  Friday saw me completely out of sorts with a raging headache and a throbbing arm so I took time out to relax.  On Saturday and Sunday the ‘unconfirmed’ IBS took a hold but I managed the extra 8 miles needed to complete the challenge over the two days.  I’m now resting up with a book, chocolate and a coffee!
A beautiful day yesterday with more views over to my favourite Moel Famau. This morning’s sunrise walk was a non event but the misty scenes more than made up for my disappointment, before the rain came tumbling down and I got yet another soaking. 🙈
I’m now resting up with a book, chocolate and a coffee.
Thank you to all who have donated and supported me and for those of you who have been affected by this cruel disease my love and thoughts are with you.
I will be continuing to walk throughout January and my fundraising page will remain open for anyone who wishes to .

Two Week milestone!

Saturday 17th Jan
UPDATE: Dementia UK Walk 50 Miles in January Challenge

Thank you to all the wonderful people out there who have supported and donated to my Challenge!

I’m at the halfway mark now and have managed to clock up 42.5 miles.
YOU have donated a magnificent £213, which has surpassed my target of £150 👏❤️🙏

It’s shocking that one in two of us in the UK will be affected by Dementia. Either by developing it ourselves or by being a loved one of someone who develops it. It can and does totally tear families apart. It is particularly hard when it is someone you have shared a long part of your life with.

I know I am 'lucky' compared to many people that my dad was in a good care home, unlike some who have given up their lives completely to care 24/7. You think of all the unfinished conversations, the life that could have been. You watch as the person you knew slowly becomes a stranger and you then learn to love the new person they’ve become…and then you grieve.

That is why I am participating in this Walk Challenge. To raise awareness to how devastating dementia is for sufferers and for their loved ones. And to bring funding to Dementia UK which depends totally on charitable donations in order to help such people.

I am doing it in particular for all the people whose loved ones have dementia and need support or who will in the future be in that situation.

Throughout this Challenge many people have sent me kind words. ‘You’re amazing’ ‘An inspiration’  are just a few…No, I’m not. The people living the Dementia journey are the true heroes and truly amazing! I am blessed to have two legs (albeit one arm at the moment) and a choice to go out or not…by choosing to walk I can only hope I make the tiniest difference and ensure there will always be support and a service available for those who have had that choice cruelly taken away.

If you can give a little that is amazing. If you can’t sharing helps just as much. Small amounts grow to make a big difference

Day 14 - Flint Foreshore ramble

Saturday 17th Jan
Dementia UK Walking 50 Miles in January - Day 14

I did things a little differently today.  I used my ‘OAP’ bus pass to get further afield and found myself in Flint.  It’s one of my favourite walks with a view of the Wirral over the estuary, castles and statues and a glimpse of my favourite Flintshire Bridge.  The bus rides in Wales are quite an experience.  It’s like a little community of its own and everyone knows everyone. One guy dropped his shopping off on the bus and went to the pub, to be reunited with said bag on Dave the driver’s return trip in an hour 🤣
I managed another five miles walking and I’m two weeks into the Challenge now…a separate post with a full update to follow ❤️

Day 14 - Dedicated to Steve Waywell

Wednesday 14th Jan
Dementia UK Walk 50 Miles in January - Day 14
Dedicated to Steve Waywell -Former Leigh RMI FC manager

On the day that many people said their goodbyes to Steve, I was determined to make an extra effort on my walk. The stars aligned…My health was good, the weather was good and I spent the day looking back on all the happy footballing memories from yesteryear.
I managed a 10 mile, very hilly, walk around Cilcain with magnificent views of Moel Famau, passing through Pantymwyn and Gwenaffield.
Once again, a huge thank you to everyone who has supported and/or donated to this Challenge. I couldn’t do it without you.

Day 13 - Furry friends and dramatic skies

Tuesday 13th Jan
Wow, what a day! Rain, dramatic skies and making furry friends along the way.   I managed another 4.5 miles today of a lot of uphill but a blessing downhill return. So very grateful for the bacon butty I took along with me,  to the friend who washed my dishes on my return and further donations to take me over my target goal ❤️

Why I do this…

Monday 12th Jan
I took time to reflect on why I’m doing this Challenge yesterday.

It was 10 years in November 2025 that we lost Dad to Dementia.  Dad lived in New Zealand so it wasn’t an easy journey for me.  It was upsetting to hear the confused calls and hear the fear in his voice as he thought the world was against him and here I was on the other side of the world.  I did manage to get over there when we decided he would be much safer and receive the best treatment in a care home. I also got there in time for his passing.  Throughout the long and distressing journey it was my younger sister who lives in NZ who took on the responsibilities of Dad’s welfare whilst also juggling work and a young family.

I learned very quickly that although the Dad we knew had nigh on gone, jumping into his ‘new world’ gave the opportunity for so many more precious and happy memories.

Since then my path has crossed with many people who have gone through or are going through the Dementia journey in many capacities, be it the person with Dementia or as a carer and I send my love and support to them.

In December 2025 I was given the news that someone from my past, the same age as me, had also passed with Dementia. This person played such a pivotal role in creating some once-in-a-lifetime memories for me and without this person there would be an unwritten chapter in my life.

I am forever grateful for the memories these two very special people gave me.

I do the Challenge because I can…because if raising money can help one family through this journey then it is worth every step I take.

Day 11 - Getting my mojo back

Sunday 11th Jan
Dementia UK Walk 50 Miles in January - Day 11

It takes a little longer to be up and out for walking at the moment and it’s difficult to prepare for long walks as backpacks and weight on the shoulders don’t go hand in hand with a broken wrist and sling…but I managed a 6.5 mile walk today, taking the safe ‘unscenic’ route to Loggerheads…don’t be fooled by unscenic…it was just beautiful and gave me time to reflect on why I’m doing this challenge.
Love and thoughts to anyone currently on the Dementia journey, at whatever stage or in whatever capacity.
Thank you to those who have continued to support me or donate to this worthy cause ❤️

Day 8 - Getting my skates on

Friday 9th Jan
Dementia UK Walk 50 Miles in January -Day 8

Gifted today with decent weather and managed a lovely 4.5 walk around Pennington Flash in Leigh to add to the tally. It’s always been a happy place for me and today didn’t  disappoint.

Week 1 - The Comeback

Thursday 8th Jan
It certainly didn’t go as expected in week one. I said from the beginning that the challenge would be walking around work  commitments and facing adverse weather conditions, not the mileage…Little did I know  that a broken wrist would be thrown into the mix!
My expectations were high though and I set a personal target of  100 miles, 50 more than the actual challenge., however, the goal of 35 in the first week has rapidly dwindled to 11 miles.
This week I aim to remain as positive as I can.  The lower  daily miles will be combined with the physical challenges I’m facing with the use of one arm, you know all those silly things you take for granted like tying a shoe lace!
Today I used my teeth to pull the sleeve up on my good arm so that I could ‘wash’ some dishes, only to realise that I now can’t pull it down.  So it’s one cold arm until someone comes to the rescue!
The most important thing that keeps me going is the incredible support and donations made by friends and family.  The mileage may be low but the donations have not disappointed…I am blessed to have these people in my life and know that they care as much as me in fighting this dreadful disease. Thank you to each and every one of you.

Day 4 and 5 Road to Recovery

Tuesday 6th Jan
Sunday - Operation Day!!  A s the snow continued to fall I was more than grateful for friends  and family who took to the treacherous roads to make sure I got to and from hospital for the  repair of my broken wrist.  A 1000 step walk to theatre  was as much of the Walk for Dementia Challenge that I managed!  The amazing surgeons worked around other health issues and managed to fix me up.
Monday- Day of rest and trying to negotiate the ‘dead’ floppy arm from the nerve blockers injected into my neck!   I have to say the pain was not as bad as expected.  I have two daughters watching over me like a hawk.  The realisation of only having one good hand is finally sinking in.  Intention now is to put a different slant on the challenge for a few days and see what tasks I can manage to do that would normally be taken for granted and do a little weather watching from the window.

Day 3 - Out of Action memo

Monday 5th Jan
Day 3 - Dementia UK Walk 50 miles in January.
A massive setback to my challenge today.  I’ve badly broken my wrist and await an operation. I’d like to say it was stuff films are made of, you know fall off a cliff or come face to face with a bull, but no… my bootlace caught in the eyelet and … TIMBER!!!! 👀 see photos for more details

Day 2 -snowy vibes

Friday 2nd Jan
It was a mad scramble today!  Holding the fort at work and seeing a disappointing light dusting of snow and then a dash to get out before sunset.
The usual 5 mile walk went through the window but a 10 minute drive took me to my very own winter wonderland and I kept stopping  to take in the breathtaking snow scenes. Amazing views of Moel Famau and Moel Findeg  were the rewards of the day. Total walk just over 2.5 miles so I’ve got some catching up to do over the weekend!

Day 1

Thursday 1st Jan
It was all about the weather today!  Under the weather from NYE celebrations and near brutal rain and wind.  A wise decision was made to gently ease myself into the 50 mile challenge with a  local five mile walk.  It rained…a lot. There were even moments of sleet. It wasn’t quite Baltic but I’m sure I’ll hit that one in the next week.  So all in all, sheep, cows, horses and muddy fields kept me on my toes
