We're walking 30 miles for Dementia UK
This September, we're walking 30 miles and raising funds for families affected by dementia. We are taking on the challenge for Dementia UK, the specialist dementia nursing charity, and would be grateful for your support.
An £8 donation could cover the telephone costs of two families seeking support through Dementia UK's free Helpline. £33 could fund an hour with a dementia specialist Admiral Nurse, helping a family with practical solutions and emotional support.
Why I’m Taking on the September Challenge for Dementia
This September, I’m stepping up to take part in a challenge that is very close to my heart. Dementia isn’t just a word for me — it’s something I live with in my family every single day.
Both of my parents are living with dementia. I’ve watched them slowly, cruelly robbed of the people they once were. It began subtly, little things that seemed questionable at first — a forgotten name, a misplaced item. But now, conversations are repeated again and again as they desperately try to hold on to names, faces, and places that slip away all too easily. It is heartbreaking to witness, and even harder to know there is no cure.
As an RMN (Registered Mental Health Nurse), I spent my career working with people struggling with mental health difficulties. In retirement, I returned to support those with dementia, helping them to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. I have seen the impact of dementia from every angle — as a nurse, as a carer, and most painfully, as a daughter.
Now, my parents are at the stage where they need long-term care. Their home, filled with a lifetime of memories and possessions, is being sold to pay for that care. It is difficult beyond words, not just for them, but for our family.
That’s why this challenge matters so much to me. Anything that can help raise money and awareness for dementia research and support is more than worthy. Every step I take, every penny raised, is in honour of my mum and dad, and for all the families facing the same painful journey.
So, I’m asking — gently but with all my heart — will you support me? Whether it’s through a donation, a share, or even just a kind word of encouragement, it all makes a difference. Together, we can shine a light in what is often a very dark journey.
Thank you, from me and from the millions affected by dementia. 💜
