Why I am raising money for Dementia UK ❤️

When I was younger, my Grandad Lettice had vascular dementia and he passed away when I was 9 years old. I was young when Grandad had dementia and it was hard to understand at that age, but I learnt a lot about dementia throughout those years and how it can alter a person’s perception of time, family and reality.

I also learnt that people living with dementia can still enjoy time with their family and friends, even if there is confusion about who they are. This experience helped me develop empathy and understanding of the illness, which is currently helping me navigate my Nana’s Alzheimer’s.

I am now 18 and have decided to fundraise for Dementia UK by completing 30 miles of walking in September.

My Nana struggles with aphasia as a result of her Alzheimer’s and this has developed throughout the past few years, making it very hard for her to communicate.

I often hear people say that dementia turns people into someone they’re not. Although the disease can bring confusion, paranoia and upset, I do not believe this to be fully true. I believe that my Nana is still the same person, she is not her disease. I believe the same was true for my Grandad.

They were both changed by their different types of dementia, but this does not and should not erase the memories that I have with them.

I would like to raise money for Dementia UK to help them continue offering support to families who are struggling with a loved one facing dementia. If you could please donate even £1, it would mean so much to me and my family. Thank you for your support ❤️
