I'm walking 30 miles in September
I’m walking 30 Miles in September and raising funds for families affected by dementia. I would be grateful for your support.
An £8 donation could cover the telephone costs of two families seeking support through Dementia UK's free Helpline. £33 could fund an hour with a dementia specialist Admiral Nurse, helping a family with practical solutions and emotional support.
Thank you!

Day 28
Monday 29th Sep Yes!! I have achieved my secret Distance Goal of 100 miles which I decided upon once I'd passed the 60 mile mark. Also, thanks to all the support and generosity of my donors I have raised well over £500.
Day 27
Monday 29th Sep Spent a lot of time in the car and a lot of time indoors with our little grandchildren as it rained. No chance to do a proper walk but did plenty of steps keeping them safe and happy, clothed and fed indoors. I should have strapped my Steptracker to myself! No step/distance tallies today. Share
Day 26
Friday 26th Sep Oh my gosh! I feel so bad for not describing my darling 4yr old granddaughter as "equally gorgeous" to my grandson in yesterday's blog. Thank goodness she can't read yet.
Day 25
Friday 26th Sep Spent today looking after my gorgeous grandson, who is aged 18mths and is now fully Mobile so did plenty of steps within in the park a.m. then plenty more picking my granddaughter up from school and walking to.a different park with them. I'm surprised and pleased to say this took me 12859 steps totalling 5.2 miles.
Day 25
Wednesday 24th Sep I volunteer in a local charity's Community Café on Wednesday mornings and today I walked in from home, beside the xanal flowing through our local park. It was such a beautiful morning and the park was particularly peaceful.
Day 23
Tuesday 23rd Sep All this walking has made me want to get fitter so today I joined a great gym with loads of instructors, equipment, classes and 2 swimming pools. My aim is to get measurably fitter and trimmer by this December. I chose an hour's "Clubbercise" class (glo-stix incl) this morning and realise that despite my weekly Zumba sessions I have a way to go.
Day 22
Monday 22nd Sep Got back on track on this beautiful Autumn day, apparently the Autumn equinox. Walked around Burrator Reservoir with my husband this afternoon. It was good to breathe in the fresh Devonshire air again and I took some pics. Every day's walking counts more than ever now as this is the last full week of the Challenge. Share
Day 20
Sunday 21st Sep As we weren't picked up from the hotel until 18:30hrs we had time to walk along the promenade in the morning and I managed 3.2 miles equalling 7876 steps. Share
Day 19
Sunday 21st Sep Today was almost totally self indulgent on my part. It was the last full day of my holiday in Cyprus and I made full use of the gorgeous hotel pool, beach and general hospitality. However, I aimed to walk a mile for this Challenge and in fact clocked up 2 miles. Every step is worthwhile. Share
Day 19
Friday 19th Sep Very lazy day, mainly relaxing by the hotel pool as I fly home tomorrow. I managed 1.8 miles when an on-shore breeze cooled the air, walking 4542 steps in 37 mins. Hurrah! Share
Day 18
Thursday 18th Sep Rather lazy day. Put in 1.4 miles equalling 3644 steps but after that our friends picked us up on their 4x4 and drove us around their part of the island, treating us to a delicious meal in their favourite local Cypriot restaurant. Share
Day 17
Wednesday 17th Sep Surprised myself again as I've used taxis twice today to escape the heat. However, I've walked 5.2 miles and got over my 60 mile target. No great insights, just glad to keep walking but may slack off these next 3 days Share
Day 16
Tuesday 16th Sep I've been so encouraged by the response I've received to casting my net wider in order to reach my enhanced goals. Have surprised myself by walking 5 miles today which for me equals 12,222 steps. I'm finding this whole thing is unlocking many happy memories of my time with my Mum which up until now had been kind of locked down by the negativity of her dementia, and for this unexpected blessing I am extremely grateful. Share
Day 15
Monday 15th Sep I haven't walked far today as on a wonderful boat trip between 11am and 4pm. However, turned down offer of coacjmh ride back to hotel and in total have clocked up 2.8 miles ie 6913 steps today and have received a generous and much appreciated donation to our cause. Share
Day 14
Sunday 14th Sep A quiet Sunday but added 3.1 miles to my total without any hardship., and have totted up over 50 miles as a result. Thanks to everyone for continued support. Share
Day 13
Saturday 13th Sep I have to say, it was much hotter here than at Haytor last Saturday. Visited a fascinating archaeological site of a Roman House and Forum, just over a mile from our hotel. Fantastic display of original mosaics. The stories the place could tell, I bet! Huge site so after a couple of hours there and walking back to the hotel (after a gold beer) I've walked 5.4 miles today over 13,000 steps. Feel very confident of achieving 60 miles by the 30th but online donations seem to have stalled. Hopefully my paper sponsorship sheets are filling up. I am spurred on as I've seen several couples here where it would seem one needs support from the other. Such devotion warms my heart and makes me want to do better. Share
Day 12
Friday 12th Sep I feel guilty seeing the posts from my co-walkers struggling thru rain and colder weather in the UK. When this holiday was booked I had no idea this Dementia UK Challenge would present itself. Anyway, I'm sure I'll get plenty of rainy walks when I get home.
Day 11
Thursday 11th Sep I just want to take a minute to remember the poor souls caught up in the horrors in New York on 09/11/2001 many of whom survived but never walked again.
Day 10
Wednesday 10th Sep I have travelled roughly 2,500 miles but have walked just 1 mile today = 2760 steps. I shall walk further tomorrow. That's what I like about this Challenge: even though I've pledged to walk 60 miles this September, my original pledge to walk at least 1 mile a day still stands and I bear no shame so long as I walk that mile. Share
Day 9
Tuesday 9th Sep Clocked up 2.5 miles today = 6,300 steps. Flying away for a break tomorrow so will do what I can within confines of airports. Mindful of the fact that I've increased my goals so need to step up!
Day 8 - Week #2 Increase in My Goals
Monday 8th Sep I'm really pleased to report that I am receiving so much encouragement both emotionally and financial, I have raised my Activity Goal to walking 60 miles in September and my Donation Goal to £500. By raising these goals I hope to maximise this opportunity to raise funds for the vital work of Dementia UK.
Day 7 7th September
Sunday 7th Sep As I could not stay awake past 9.30pm last night, I decided to simply fulfill my pledge and walk 1 mile on the flat today. Left it slightly late to check progress so was surprised I’d already walked a mile. Took shorter route home and clocked up 1.8 miles = 4542 steps in 37 minutes. Share
Day 6 Saturday 6th September- Haytor
Saturday 6th Sep Met some friends and walked up to Haytor on Dartmoor National Park rewarded by panoramic views across the moors and over to the blue sea of Torbay. The wind was refreshingly strong and we were amazed to find pink lilies floating on the pond at Haytor Quarry. It wasn't a long walk but the steep gradients made it quite challenging. It did us all good. Share
Day 5 - 5th September
Friday 5th Sep Game of two halves today. Walked into town and met the local reporter who plans to cover this attempt of mine to honour my dear Mum's memory and raise awareness of Dementia & Alzheimer's in the here and now for those in need of support. Also met the lovely Heather who was such a solid support to me when my Mum was giving me all sorts of grief! Huh, we use that word too lightly nowadays, sorry. So clocked up 1.3 miles there then set off layer with more purpose and pleased to say my total walk for Dementia UK came to 4.6 miles= 11,282 steps. More cash raised too. Glad I ignored my overnight aches and pains as I feel fine for moving around. See you tomorrow! Xx Share
Day 4 Thursday 4th September
Thursday 4th Sep Today I decided to walk first thing and found going up & down the steep hill near home is 1.3 miles! Carried on and totalled 5 miles = 12,288 steps. Also broke through the £200 Donation Goal - thank-you sooo much to everyone who made this happen. On advice, I have raised this to £300 in the hope of helping even more dementia sufferers and their carers. I'm a bit stiff so may ease off a bit tomorrow. Time will tell...... Share
Wednesday 3rd September
Wednesday 3rd Sep I couldn't carve out much time to walk today but I did a voluntary morning shift at the Community Café and raised £20 cash for this Challenge. A Trustee of the Charity running the Café has suggested that I walk through a 'Finish Line' into the Café on Tuesday 30th September and by publicising this locally beforehand I should be able to raise more awareness and hopefully more funds for Dementia UK. This is very encouraging and today, through heavy showers, I've walked 9,250 steps amounting to 3.7 miles in 1hr 18 mins. Share
Day 2 - 0w/09/25
Tuesday 2nd Sep Started with a new class: Sculpt Pilates. Felt the burrrn as I haven't done Pilates for about 20yrs and there's nothing sculpted about me!
