I'm walking 130 miles in September

I’m walking 130 Miles in September and raising funds for families affected by dementia. I would be grateful for your support.

An £8 donation could cover the telephone costs of two families seeking support through Dementia UK's free Helpline. £33 could fund an hour with a dementia specialist Admiral Nurse, helping a family with practical solutions and emotional support.

Thank you!

From Fractures to Fungi: Completing 130 Miles for Dementia UK

Saturday 27th Sep
I’ve crossed the finish line – 130 miles for Dementia UK! 💙

Finished with a fractured hand & wrist, but discovered a new passion along the way: mushroom & fungi hunting 🍄 Keeping the brain active is just as important as keeping the body moving.

With Rosie & Taghd by my side (who never runs out of energy!), the walking will definitely continue… just need to remember to lift my feet! 😉

A huge thank you to everyone who has donated and supported me along the way 🙏💙 If you haven’t yet donated and can spare a couple of quid, it’s for a great cause.

📸 The Blusher: edible, but must be well cooked before eating as it contains a toxin destroyed by heat. It can be confused with the toxic Panthercap… so I’ll be leaving this one right where it is (just in case)!

Day 21 – Walking & Mushrooms

Sunday 21st Sep

Day 21 – Walking and Mushrooms

It’s been a little while since my last update, but the walking hasn’t stopped – every day I’ve been adding miles towards my 130-mile challenge for Dementia UK.

Sometimes, when you’re out walking the same paths, the scenery becomes familiar and you find yourself noticing the smaller details instead of the bigger views. Over the past week or so, those details have taken the shape of mushrooms! While others may be snapping photos of wide landscapes, I’ve been crouched down, camera in hand, marvelling at the fungi that appear almost overnight.

Mushroom hunting has become a kind of side quest to my main journey. They’re endlessly fascinating – some edible, some not, each one a reminder of how rich and surprising nature can be when you slow down and really look.

And that’s what this challenge is about for me: slowing down, taking notice, and making each mile count. Every step is in support of families living with dementia, who walk a path far harder than mine, every single day.

So while my photo roll may be filled with chanterelles, porcini, and scarletinas rather than sweeping views, the miles are adding up just the same – and so is the support. Thank you to everyone who has donated or cheered me on so far.

Here’s to the next stretch of the journey – more miles, more mushrooms, and more awareness raised for Dementia UK.

Seems I wasn’t alone in thinking an early start was the way to go this morning.

Another wet and windy one today 🌧️ Instead of grumbling, I’m embracing it —rain clears the air, boosts the mood, and releases that gorgeous earthy smell (thank you, Geosmin!). So if you spot me puddle-jumping along the way 💦, just know every soggy step is for an amazing cause 💙
If you’re able to support my walk, a donation to Dementia UK would mean the world—not just to me, but to the families who rely on their incredible help 🙏💙

2 days to go!

Saturday 30th Aug
Two days to go!
130 miles, roughly 4.5  miles a day, not a huge distance, but I was on crutches until June after my hip replacement.
My recovery took a lot longer because I was in such a pickle before the operation. I put on well over a stone  and  lost a lot of muscle in my legs. I couldn’t walk to the end of my driveway for a few months before it. Struggled getting in and out of the car and bed, and sitting down was painful. I was in such a bad way that I was given a disabled badge. Then, after the operation, I ignored the physio’s advice and tried to do far too much too quickly. As a result, I ended up giving myself hamstring tendinitis, which set me back and had me walking like a duck again. So it was back to the drawing board: a lot more physiotherapy, working on my core strength, and building the muscles up in my legs again. I got a rescue border collie, then a second, which has had me out walking between four and five miles a day for the last couple of weeks. After the walk, I can feel my hamstrings are tight. Walking up and down Box Hill twice, I definitely felt that. I’m going to walk 5 miles a day. And if we have some dry days over the next month, I will be aiming to do more each day.
Over the last couple of weeks, I had the sad news. A friend has been diagnosed with dementia, and  today I heard an  my aunt has it too.
This is a very worthwhile cause. So come on, guys, put your hands in your pockets. It doesn’t matter how little it is—every little bit helps.

130 miles

Tuesday 26th Aug
Now I've a new hip, and now it's time to take on a challenge! I'm asking you lovely people to support a very important cause.
For the month of September I am going to make it a little harder. I am going to walk 130 miles by the end of the month. I've lost friends too early to this cruel illness, and I know many of you have been affected in one way or another as well.
No contribution is too small; every little bit helps. Please support me in this challenge and the fight against dementia. Thank you!

Good luck Tracey, my granddad was only saying the other day how he walked 100 miles with a cricket ball for charity many moons ago and it was the hardest thing he's ever done, and he's run the marathon! So will be thinking of you ♥️ such a worthy cause too, very admirable
