Monday 2nd Jun I want to say a massive thank you to everyone so far who has shared the love throughout the last 24 hours. Its been an incredible view looking at the donations flowing in; we have hit way past the goal of £250 milestone, which i’ve been constantly increasing.
Playing for Dad: 36 Holes in Honour of the Kindest Man I Knew
Saturday 31st MayHi, I’m Tommy and soon I’ll be taking on a challenge with some friends that is very close to my heart: playing 36 holes of golf in one day to raise money for Dementia UK.
My dad was diagnosed with dementia in 2014, when I was just 8 years old. At an age when I was only beginning to understand the world, I was faced with the brutal reality of watching someone I love deteriorate in ways I couldn’t fully make sense of. By 2016, we had no choice but to move him into a care home. Over time the space between us only grew because of the illness.
We sadly lost him on January 23rd 2022, roughly around 11:45am. I was in my final year of secondary school, just about to begin my GCSEs, which was a moment that was already full of pressure and uncertainty. This made the weight even heavier by the loss of someone so important to me.
Dementia took away so much time, connection, and memories. It stole a proper father-son connection from us, especially during the years we should have been making the best ones. One of the things that he would have loved is chance to play golf with me. He absolutely loved it. Golf and cricket were his passions, and he played all the time before his illness. It’s a part of why I picked up the game, I wanted to feel close to him in some way, to carry that piece of him forward.
I’ve chosen to commemorate him by doing something he loved. Playing 36 holes in one day feels like the most fitting tribute.
I’m raising money for Dementia UK because I know how devastating this illness is; not just for the person diagnosed, but for their family and friends it affects. The support this charity provides is life-changing, and I want to do what I can to help other families hold onto more of their time together than I got.
