Walk 50 Miles in January 2026

I'm walking 50 Miles in January for Dementia UK

This January, I'm walking 50 Miles and raising funds to help ensure no family faces dementia alone. I'm taking on the challenge for Dementia UK, the specialist dementia nursing charity, and would be grateful for your support.

Your donation, big or small, makes a difference. £33 could fund a new dementia specialist Admiral Nurse to spend an hour helping a family in the community, offering practical solutions and emotional support to cope with their loved one’s distressed behaviour.

Thank you!

My Updates

Day 31

Saturday 31st Jan
Done! And what a finish, joined by 8 lovely ladies and 3 dogs walking over 10 miles from my house to my mums nursing home. It’s been a lovely day after the weather threatening to rain and snow all week just a bit of mud to tackle! Thank you so much to everyone who has donated and Holly Tree Lodge for putting on a surprise spread for the walkers, we were not expecting it and very much appreciated. Also mum was in good spirits and got to meet some friends and dogs which made her smile x

Day 30

Friday 30th Jan
So close now, early night as it’s an early start and long walk to see mum tomorrow. It’s just amazing how much everyone has donated x

Day 29

Thursday 29th Jan
Mum enjoyed a FaceTime call tonight with her grandson James while I visited her. It’s also good to see her smiling when I visit and she drank plenty. Those battling dementia can sometimes refuse liquids and food, which can lead to severe dehydration, which unfortunately my mum has experienced. So it’s good to see her drinking, tonight was a chocolate milkshake x

Day 28

Wednesday 28th Jan
Making good progress, up to 45 miles!! This challenge has been tough and would recommend to anyone to get you moving and raise awareness for a great cause.

Commando tonight, which was a huge struggle as energy levels are very low today, but with some encouragement from a good friend I made it 😂

Saturday I will be walking 10 miles from my home to my mums nursing home, and the weather doesn’t exactly look on my side! But a few amazing people have volunteered to joined me.  Dementia effects so many people, so more awareness can only be a good thing x

Day 27

Wednesday 28th Jan
Hit the work gym tonight, 2 miles on the treadmill listening to a bit of Jonny Cash! I know I’m weird 😂

Day 26

Wednesday 28th Jan
Much needed counselling visit, trying to navigate my thoughts and feelings through a tough period.

Day 25

Sunday 25th Jan
A mile done today after a family party last night, feeling a touch delicate. It was lovely seeing so many of my family members and catching up as we all have such busy life’s.  Also sad as my mum wasn’t there and she always liked having a dance with her siblings, partners, nieces and nephews.  Everyone shared their love and it was tough holding in the emotions.  Anyway I went to visit mum today and saw one of her brothers and my aunt while I was there.  She was happy, lots of smiles, which is always so good to see x

Day 24

Saturday 24th Jan
Parkrun ✔️ very slowly but done!

Day 21

Wednesday 21st Jan
Commando with my boy tonight, he did so well and I clocked up another couple of miles. Making great progress with the challenge 👊🏻

Day 20

Wednesday 21st Jan
It’s my parents 53rd wedding anniversary and unfortunately it wasn’t a good day for mum, she’s full of cold and it literally knocked her out.  She’s ok now though and getting lots of attention from the carers in the home.  Dementia is so tough on the partner left behind at home, it’s very lonely,  especially when you’ve been married for so many years. Another reason why Dementia Uk is so important.

Day 19

Monday 19th Jan
Commando for tonight, over 4km done which was tough but so much support and encouragement from other members Over 30 miles in now!!!!

Day 18

Monday 19th Jan
Sunday, so it’s been football in the rain, lost 2-0 but my dad loves watching his grandson play. It’s these memories that are precious.  Mum definitely doesn’t miss football, she was never a fan of standing in the cold not matter how much we wrapped her up .

I cooked Sunday dinner in the evening, trying my best to get some mum duties in, always cook the Yorkshire puddings from scratch, mum always did so I need to carry that tradition on. Although mine never get the crispy edge with spongy bottom like my mums, never quite as good!!

Day 17

Saturday 17th Jan
I’ve clocked some miles today completing Parkrun, it’s been 7 years since I did it last and pleased with my time. This afternoon I went to visit mum with James, she looked and well and James made her laugh a few times which is always good to see x

Walk 31st January

Saturday 17th Jan
So on Saturday 31st January as part of walking 50 miles for Dementia UK I have decided to walk from my house to my mums nursing home in Shafton.

It’s roughly 10 miles, I’ve set a custom route and will cover woods, fields and some roads.

I plan to set off at 9am and I’m opening this up to anyone who would like to join me.  I already have a few volunteers so no pressure, I won’t be alone 😜 but if you fancy a challenge for a great cause then join in.

PM me for more details x

Day 16

Friday 16th Jan
A mile walk followed by taking part in a tough challenge at work, 2km on an assault bike, seems easy enough but oh my goodness it isn’t, heart pounding!! Good news regarding my mum, the home is coming out the other side of a flu outbreak so the visit can be stepped up again now. Xx

Day 15

Friday 16th Jan
Long walk to an appointment today taking in the sights of Leeds city centre

Day 14

Wednesday 14th Jan
Commando fit evening, working my arms, ouch!!! But also 3.5km covered, all counts! Feeling guilty is very much part of a parent being ill, am I seeing them enough, am I doing enough, what more can I do, am I a disappointment, while also balancing family, work, exercise, friends and two fat cats…oh and 50 miles thrown in. But when it gets me down I just think what mum would say, she’d be proud and want to me to keep active. See you very soon mum xx

Day 13

Wednesday 14th Jan
Almost halfway! But today’s a rest day! My body needs to stop!! So cup of tea and Netflix after work

Day 12

Monday 12th Jan
Commando fit session in the park with almost 70 fellow commandos 😜. All this exercise is really making my muscles burn but so worth it when I think of the cause and how much has been donated, thank you x

Day 11

Sunday 11th Jan
Visiting my mum at her nursing home. Each time I’m amazed at the hard work and positive attitude from the staff in such a challenging job. Mums doing ok though, apparently she keeps trying to help the staff as her nursing instincts kick in, 40 years of nursing does get forgotten that easily x

Day 10

Saturday 10th Jan
5km trial run at Harewood House in the sunshine with some of my Commando buddies. Stunning views but difficult run (with some walking). Just need the rest of today to defrost! 😀

Day 9

Saturday 10th Jan
Short walk, preparing for a morning run!

Day 8

Thursday 8th Jan
No walk today, an appointment with my counsellor instead.  Really helps to have someone to offload to and attempt to organise all my thoughts!!!  My mums dementia impacts so many relationships and aspects of my life so it’s helpful to have an outlet.  Tired, emotional but feeling just that little bit better.  Dementia UK funds can pay for a specialist Admiral nurse to answer a call for someone  in need.  I’ve used this service so know how important it is to have the right advice and ears who understand.

Day 7

Wednesday 7th Jan
Commando fit tonight, good 2.5 miles done, on track!!!

Day 6

Tuesday 6th Jan
Hit the gym at work, a mile done and some exercises

Day 5

Monday 5th Jan
2.8 miles at commando fit on a freezing cold field with a great bunch of people

Day 4

Sunday 4th Jan
Lazy morning with some “me” time while the boys went to watch Leeds play. Went to visit my mum later afternoon and a walk in the cold when I got home. Dementia is a tough journey and throwing some curve balls I didn’t expect, messes with you head and makes you rethink things, what’s really important!!! Love you mum x

Day 3

Saturday 3rd Jan
Early morning walk/jog thanks to misjudging the time it would take to walk from mine to commando fit! Arrived a few minutes late and got a telling off from Danny - upside I’ve down 4 miles today!

Day 2

Friday 2nd Jan
Short walk, aiming to clock more up at the weekend, it’s freezing!

Day 1

Thursday 1st Jan
First walk of the year, not a big one but it all counts, 2 miles done!  Great to get some fresh air for mental health
