Walk 50 Miles in January 2026

I'm walking 50 Miles in January for Dementia UK

This January, in memory of my lovely dad (also Steve), I'm walking 50 Miles and raising funds to help ensure no family faces dementia alone. I'm taking on the challenge for Dementia UK, the specialist dementia nursing charity, and would be grateful for your support.

Your donation, big or small, makes a difference. £33 could fund a new dementia specialist Admiral Nurse to spend an hour helping a family in the community, offering practical solutions and emotional support to cope with their loved one’s distressed behaviour.

Thank you!

Steve

My Updates

Day 27 - mission accomplished 🙂🎉

Saturday 31st Jan
Work trip to Sheffield. Walked to and from station rather than driving - 3.8 miles.

Day 26 - Eccleshill Village

Saturday 31st Jan
Took a detour en route to picking up grandson from school - 2.2 miles 🙂

Day 23 - first treadmill session of the year

Friday 23rd Jan
More bad weather, so decided to walk to the gym and do 2.5 miles on the treadmill. 4.8 miles in total.

Days 21 and 22 - more rest days!

Friday 23rd Jan
Terrible weather, work and family commitments.

Day 20 - epic 5.5 mile local walk

Friday 23rd Jan
Decided to be clever and take the cross-country route home, but I was blocked by a closed railway crossing that Google Maps didn’t know about! Had to retrace my steps, making a planned 3 mile walk into 5.5 miles. Lovely walk though.

Days 18 and 19 - rest days (family time)

Friday 23rd Jan
Batteries recharged ready for the coming week

Day 17 - Idle walk! 2.5 miles

Friday 23rd Jan
Nice walk round Idle, Bradford. Scenic but hilly!

Day 16 - two weeks done, two thirds of the way to 50 miles 🚶🚶🚶🙂

Friday 16th Jan
Another local walk, this time 3.8 miles along the River Nidd.  Lovely weather, great views.

Day 15 - day off, (sort of!)

Friday 16th Jan
Thursday is shopping day, delivering supplies to my 94-year old mother-in-law, who is living at home with dementia. It’s also school run day for two of our grandkids, so not much chance for long walks today!

Day 14 - exploring my local area (3.7 miles)

Friday 16th Jan
Goldsborough is a hidden gem of a village, only 1.5 miles from home.

Day 13 - 3 miles

Friday 16th Jan
Local stroll

Day 12 - 3.5 mile canal walk, lovely!

Tuesday 13th Jan
It’s a bit warmer (or less cold!) today. Ideal for a stroll along the Leeds Liverpool canal. Lots of wildlife to see and the reward of a lovely mug of hot chocolate at the end.

Day 11 - day off!

Tuesday 13th Jan
Lovely family birthday gathering - no walking today.

Day 10 - longest (and coldest) walk yet🚶🥶, 4.4 miles 🙂

Tuesday 13th Jan
Back to Conyngham (Knaresborough) parkrun for the first time in several months, a big step on my rehab journey after suffering  a stroke last year.  It’s the coldest morning of the year but the walk was great - I even felt quite warm by the end! More importantly, I felt a warm sense of achievement. Looking forward to next week 🤞

Day 9 - more local exploring

Tuesday 13th Jan
3 miles around the streets and paths of Knaresborough, our lovely home town!

Day 8 - pottering around

Tuesday 13th Jan
1.2 miles around supermarket + school run

Day 7 - another 3 miles 🙂

Tuesday 13th Jan
Local walk around Knaresborough

Day 6 - back in the saddle!

Wednesday 7th Jan
Feeling much better - 3 miles today, around my local area 🙂🚶

Day 5 - another rest day ☹️

Wednesday 7th Jan
Still recovering from a nasty bout of food poisoning at New Year, so decided to take it easy 😴

Day 4 - gradual recovery

Monday 5th Jan
Short trip to the supermarket (0.9 miles). I’ll need to average 2 miles per day for the rest of the month. Hopefully no more illness 🤞🚶.

Day 3 - Shopping

Saturday 3rd Jan
1.2 miles walking round White Rose Centre and Sainsbury’s 🛍️🛒

Day 2 - Unanticipated rest day

Saturday 3rd Jan
No walking (or anything else) today due to illness 🤢🤮

Day 1, New Year’s Day 2026

Thursday 1st Jan
Gentle start - 1.6 miles round the stunning Harlow Carr Gardens, bracing ❄️🧣
