My Nan and Grandad’s Story

My Nan is my best friend. She has always been the heart of our family loving, caring, kind, funny, and truly beautiful inside and out. She has spent her life putting others first, making everyone feel valued, and bringing joy into the lives of those around her.

Now, she lives with dementia. At times, she becomes forgetful, and conversations often circle back as she repeats herself. But what hasn’t changed is her warmth, her laughter, and the love she continues to give so freely.

Dementia has touched our family in more than one way. My grandad, on my dad’s side, is also living with dementia. He is struggling slightly more than my nan, and our family has to do much more to support him in his daily life. He has always been such a smart, intellectual, and creative man which makes it even harder to see him unable to do the things he once loved and excelled at. Watching dementia take away parts of who he has always been is heartbreaking, not only for him but for all of us who love him.

Walking for dementia is deeply personal to me. I walk to honour my Nan and my Grandad, for the people they have always been and for the moments we still share. I walk for the memories we hold onto, and for the hope that more families in the future will be spared the challenges that come with this condition.

Every step I take is for them, and for all the incredible people living with dementia and their loved ones. Together, we can raise awareness, show support, and help create a world where no one faces dementia alone.

An £10 donation can cover the telephone costs of two families seeking support through Dementia UK's free Helpline. £33 could fund an hour with a dementia specialist Admiral Nurse, helping a family with practical solutions and emotional support.

Any donations, small or big is very appreciated.

Thank you! 🫶🏼
