Walk 50 Miles in January 2026

I'm walking 50 Miles in January for Dementia UK

This January, I'm walking 50 Miles and raising funds to help ensure no family faces dementia alone. I'm taking on the challenge for Dementia UK, the specialist dementia nursing charity, and would be grateful for your support.

Your donation, big or small, makes a difference. £33 could fund a new dementia specialist Admiral Nurse to spend an hour helping a family in the community, offering practical solutions and emotional support to cope with their loved one’s distressed behaviour.

Thank you!

Final walk

Saturday 31st Jan
My 50 miles challenge began with a week of crisp, blue January skies, frost, sunsets and colour.  It ended today with what can only be described as January murk: grey skies, drizzle (I missed the brief morning sun) and welly-defying levels of mud up on Shotover, the country park nearest our home.
After 51.35 miles (18 hours 6 mins and c.125,000 steps), I am happy to say that (blisters aside) I could keep up the walking. It's been a fabulous opportunity to catch up with friends and family; it's given me the sense of purpose I sometimes lack in January; and I've discovered that walking into Oxford from Headington is not only possible, but sometimes beats the bus.
It's been harder keeping up posting on social media, possibly because I've been out more...
This is not to say that I've forgotten the purpose of the challenge. If you are reading this and haven't sponsored me, please do. Dementia UK have an excellent website and online forum that I found really helpful over the last few years when the search for answers, ideas and the voices of 'others who knew' weighed heavy. They also provide valuable in-person help and advice in the community, including in banks, which the funds from challenges like this help support.
Thank you to everyone who has walked with me and / or sponsored me. It's been a good way to remember two wonderful women and to stand in support of everyone facing the challenge they went through.

Happy New Year!

Thursday 1st Jan
... from South Park in Oxford. There's a wonderful view of the dreaming spires and right across to Cumnor from the top of the hill, and many beautiful trees. 4.2 miles, walking back up through Headington Hill Park and along Cuckoo Lane.

Gill and Jane

Wednesday 31st Dec
For Gill, walks meant being with family or friends, camera in hand, lunch plans arranged in advance. For my mum, who loved taking my sister and me on walks when we were small, walking at all became a triumph over the odds. For me, walking 50 miles in January seems a no-brainer: a joyful way to remember two women who loved and shaped me, a prompt to connect with friends and family and a reason to have fun, take pictures and eat cake. If you'd like to join me on any walks, please get in touch. I'd love your company!
