I'm walking 30 miles in September
I’m walking 30 Miles in September and raising funds for families affected by dementia. I would be grateful for your support.
An £8 donation could cover the telephone costs of two families seeking support through Dementia UK's free Helpline. £33 could fund an hour with a dementia specialist Admiral Nurse, helping a family with practical solutions and emotional support.
Thank you!

My Story 🌹🕊💕
Tuesday 5th Aug This September, I’ll be walking 60 miles - a mile every day for two charities that now mean alot to me; Dementia UK and Cancer Research UK. I’m walking in memory of my beautiful mum, 🌹Janet Holland🌹 , who we heartbreakingly lost in October last year.In 2023, we were in the thick of trying to understand what was happening to Mum. She was struggling with confusion and memory loss for a while, and we were desperate for answers. While going through tests, we were hit with another devastating blow: a diagnosis of Small Cell Lung Cancer.
Life over the next year quickly became a whirlwind of treatments, hospital stays, and constant worry. All the while, we were watching Mum slip away in another way.. her memory, her independence, her spark.
In June 2024, we finally got the diagnosis of mixed Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia. But it came too late. By now Mum already needed 24/7 care. Just a few weeks later, in August, she entered a dementia care home for what initially would be four weeks of respite. It became a permanent stay.
Last August just after Mum had gone into care I was scrolling social media, emotionally drained and feeling helpless, when I came across this walking challenge for Dementia UK. It felt like fate. So I signed up.
I did it with my heart full and heavy, raising a total of £164!
Then came October. Mum had a fall in the care home and broke her hip. The surgery went ahead, but complications followed. She developed aspiration pneumonia and was placed on end-of-life care. She fought for 12 days, and early on 23rd October 2024, my wonderful mum took her final breath.
It’s hard to explain how deeply that loss has shaped me. My whole world cracked wide open.
So this year, I’m walking again, this time in her honour. For my Mum. For the love we shared. For the memories I carry. For every family walking this same painful road.
I walk for hope. I walk because I still can. I walk for those living with dementia, those fighting cancer, and those grieving like me.
If you’re able to donate, or even just share, I’d be so grateful. Every step I take this September will be for her.
“Grief is just love with nowhere to go. So I walk...for every step I can’t take with her, I take for her.”
