I'm walking 31 Miles in May for Dementia UK

This May, I’m taking on a challenge that means more to me than any distance ever could: walking 31 miles in support of Dementia UK, in memory of my beautiful nan, Betty.

In March this year, we said goodbye to her after a five-year battle with dementia. Even writing that still doesn’t feel real. Dementia is such a cruel illness — it doesn’t just take away memories, it slowly changes the person you love, piece by piece. But through it all, my nan was still my nan. Her warmth, her presence, and the love she gave our family never truly left.

Growing up, she was such a big part of my life. The kind of nan who made everything feel safe, who always had time for you, who loved in the quiet, steady way that stays with you forever. Watching dementia take hold over the years was incredibly hard — for her and for all of us. It’s not just a diagnosis; it’s a long, emotional journey filled with moments of confusion, sadness, and helplessness. But also moments of connection, love, and holding on to what still remains.

That’s why this challenge matters so much to me.

Walking 31 miles in May is my way of doing something positive in the face of loss. Each mile represents not just the days of the month, but the journey so many families go through when dementia becomes part of their lives. It’s for the memories we hold onto, and for the ones that slowly faded. It’s for my nan, and for every family navigating this heartbreaking illness.

This won’t just be a physical challenge — there will be days when it’s tough, when I’m tired, when life gets busy. But I’ll keep going, because this is bigger than me. It’s for Betty. It’s for awareness. It’s for helping other families feel less alone.

If you can, I’d be so grateful for any support — whether that’s a donation, sharing this post, or simply cheering me on along the way. Every bit helps.

Nan, this is for you. Always 🤍
