I'm cycling 300 miles for Dementia UK

This June, I'm cycling 300 miles and raising funds to help ensure no family faces dementia alone. I'm taking on the challenge for Dementia UK, the specialist dementia nursing charity, and would be grateful for your support.

Your donation, big or small, makes a difference. Just £8 can cover the telephone costs for two families seeking support through Dementia UK's free Helpline. £33 could fund a new dementia specialist Admiral Nurse to spend an hour helping a family in the community, offering practical solutions and emotional support to cope with their loved one’s distressed behaviour.

Thank you!

Today’s hot & Hilly Ride

Thursday 19th Jun
We’ve been waiting for a day without wind or rain to do a challenging ride in North Yorkshire. Our route took us through Richmond, Downholme, East Witton, Spennithorpe, Middleham and Bedale. Glorious day! I got a puncture but my team had it fixed in minutes. 75.5 miles for me.

A windy ride to Northallerton and back - over 300 miles now 👍🏻

Tuesday 17th Jun
Decided not to do a strenuous ride today as we are planning on a hilly 75 miles on Thursday. I somehow managed to stop my Strava when we got to Northallerton (16.5 miles) and had to re-start as a new ride on the way home (23 miles). This takes me to over the 300 miles. Let’s see what mileage I end the month with.
It was another blustery ride. I’m pretty sick of the wind.

Today’s ride

Sunday 15th Jun
Ride out with Terry & Lynn today. 45.6 miles for me. Should reach my 300 miles on Tuesday’s ride.

Tired & Grumpy

Thursday 12th Jun
Set out with my cycling friends to go to Stokesley today. I quickly realised I was still tired from Tuesday’s 64 miles. I was also grumpy.  I decided 17 miles into the ride to stop at Roots Farm Shop for a coffee & scone and let them carry on.
Home now with another 35 miles ticked off.

Had a lovely ride to Masham today

Tuesday 10th Jun
Tuesday is my usual cycling club day out. Today 7 of us cycled Darlington to beautiful Masham and back.  Lunch was beans on toast at Bordar House, we stopped at the chapel in Snape to refill water bottles and at Leeming for a cuppa and a toasted Teacake.  A grand day out and 63.8 miles which equates to 102km added to my distance.

Ride 2

Sunday 8th Jun
The weather prevented my usual rides out last week but today  Lynn, Terry & I went to Bedale and back.  Miraculously we didn’t get wet but it was a bit blustery.
188 miles left to reach my target. Hopefully the weather will allow me to get out cycling this week.

Darlington to Thirsk & back.

Tuesday 3rd Jun
First 63 miles cycled today. It was too windy and my hips hurt but it’s 63 miles done leaving 237 miles still to do.

I’m cycling 300 miles in June for dementia

Friday 23rd May
My Mum had dementia.  It started with little things; losing keys, forgetting names. It progressed gradually until she was forgetting to go to her weekly charity shop job.  She had a great support network as my brothers and I lived close by and she lived next door to her sister and around the corner from her life-long friend.  I suppose we ‘managed’ her  for quite a while.  She was unlucky to have the double whammy of breast cancer and dementia which meant her last year was a steady decline from February to early December when she died. Her Grandchildren were her pride and joy and she never wanted to miss a birthday.  One of the saddest things I witnessed was in the October before she died;  she was trying to sign a birthday card and she couldn’t remember how to write her name.  I had to put my hand over hers and guide it, like a child learning to write, so she could sign Gran-ma, the way she had hundreds of time before.
Dementia scares me. I worry it is in my future. I will always support dementia charities.    We must try to find a cure.  Please help me by donating a couple of quid.
