I'm walking 62 Miles in October

I’m walking 62 Miles in October and raising funds so that families affected by dementia get the specialist help and advice they need. I would be grateful for your support.

An £10 donation can cover the telephone costs of two families seeking support through Dementia UK's free Helpline. £33 could fund an hour with a dementia specialist Admiral Nurse, helping a family with practical solutions and emotional support.

Thank you!

In A&E (click on the photo of Mum for details in my blog)

Friday 31st Oct
I spent the afternoon and evening hors de combat after experiencing mild chest pains in the afternoon. Sitting for such a long time in A&E was really stressful and I found myself weeping several times. Thankfully, Kathryn (a.k.a. "The Rock") was with me and the doctor decided there was nothing cardiac-related going on, not least because I hadn't experienced any symptoms while doing all this Walking For Dementia. I rather fear I have a long way to go with this grief.

Keeping going...

Thursday 23rd Oct
Kathryn accompanied me today -- it was lovely!

Rain stopped walk!

Tuesday 21st Oct
Today's walk was to drop off a certificate of death to an IFA. There was a bit of drizzle on the way there. But shortly after setting out to go home, it starts to rain. Luckily I wasn't far from a bus stop and even more luckily I only had to wait a couple of minutes for a bus 😁

0 miles today

Sunday 19th Oct
Bad weather & therefore a quiet day mostly at home. But I only need half a mile a day from here to the end of the month so that should be ok...

Mum B.A.(10/1930 - 10/2025)

Saturday 18th Oct
Another dry day so another 3 miles' walk :-)  I found Mum's graduation photo so have made it my new profile picture. She was awarded a B.A. in Mathematics from the Open University in December 1974 (maths quiz: how old was she?)

There & Back Again

Friday 17th Oct
Today's walk was extended somewhat by virtue of the Hailey Park being fenced off while the footpaths are being upgraded. "How ironic",  I thought! Thanks to everyone's generosity I have raised over £1000 (excluding gift aid)! That is a real inspiration for me to keep going.

No miles today...

Monday 13th Oct
... but today we registered Mum's death, went to the funeral director's to sign forms & talk through funeral arrangements, and finally to the care home to pick up the last few things of Mum's that were still there.

Halfway there!

Friday 10th Oct
10 days in & I've walked 31 miles - go me! I'm taking advantage of the lovely Indian summer weather while it's with us. Also, I'm delighted to say my arthritic knees are holding up well! Earlier today I found my parents' wedding album so I'll put up a photo from that happy day in September 1956 later...

Back in Cardiff...

Wednesday 8th Oct
... and had a lovely walk in the wonderful afternoon sunshine with my good friend Julian. Feeling very positive about getting to 62 miles by the end of the month. I'm up to 20 miles (give or take) in 8 days :-) :-)

RIP Kathleen Mary Burgess (1930 - 2025)

Monday 6th Oct
Mum passed away peacefully in the early hours of Oct 5 at her nursing home. She was so bright, funny, chatty, generous, interested and warm-hearted. I miss her. I will carry on with this challenge because this is all for her memory. Thanks.

Another shopping trip, another few miles :-)

Saturday 4th Oct
Off to Narberth this morning to the West Wales Wool Festival for Kathryn & Ellis with me as assistant driver. Way too cold for a walk there while K&E were perusing all things sheepish (although the app clocked me doing 0.35 miles) so I entertained myself in the Narberth Museum. Back in Cardiff got a decent walk in combined with a trip to Tesco. They all count, right?

P.S. If you'd like to support my efforts please click "Donate". I have exceeded my target but don't let that stop you!

'I'm walking in the rain'

Friday 3rd Oct
Set out earlier today due to the forecast of heavy rain later. It was dry but started drizzling on & off after a few minutes. I was not deterred even after walking down a lane I'd not seen before which turned out to be a cul-de-sac :-D

Another double header today :-)

Thursday 2nd Oct
Walk no.1 was to Lidl in Llandaff north - they all count, right?
Walk no.2 was a longer affair all the way down the east bank of the Taff to Blackweir and then back up the other side. I SAW A HERON!
Not looking hopeful for many miles tomorrow given the weather forecast.

We're off -- twice!

Thursday 2nd Oct
Am off to a flyer with two walks today -- this morning I walked into town (to buy jeans and visit to Barclays to sort out Mum's finances for the coming 12 months) & then later to Burnham-on-Sea to hang out with daughter Sara and son-in-law Joshua who are great. Routes already posted on FB but here's a lovely photo from this morning's effort...

Dry Walk

Tuesday 30th Sep
walked 1.2 miles from home to Pontcanna to check out the MapMyWalk app. All looking good for the real thing tomorrow...

Here's the plan...

Tuesday 30th Sep
If it's a nice day, I will get loads of steps in to make up for wet days when maybe I won't do much more than pop to the Spar and back to achieve a 0.5mi round trip. Dry run (walk) this afternoon with a walk to Pontcanna.

Oh, and my profile picture is a photo of my Mum from five years ago.
