Winter Reading Challenge

I'm doing Winter Reading Challenge for Dementia UK

This winter, I'm reading and raising funds to help ensure no family faces dementia alone. I'm taking on the challenge for Dementia UK, the specialist dementia nursing charity, and would be grateful for your support.

Your donation, big or small, makes a difference. £33 could fund a new dementia specialist Admiral Nurse to spend an hour helping a family in the community, offering practical solutions and emotional support to cope with their loved one’s distressed behaviour.

Thank you!

The Kindle wants a holiday. I just dumped a ton of ghost books on it.

Broken Homes (Rivers Of London 4) by Ben Around

Friday 18th Sep
Magic, policing and London. Been on my Audible for a while. Kobna Holbrook-Smith is a superb narrator.

Red and Dead (The Netherweird Chronicles 1) by Violet Fenn

Friday 18th Sep
One of my all time favourite books. And having had a stressful few months, is up for the umpteenth re-read. The undead and related shenanigans in Liverpool are very therapeutic.

Thirty-Two Words For Field by Manchán Magan

Friday 18th Sep
First up for the challenge! Manchán Magan explores how the Irish language relates to the landscape and the wider world.

The Keracatonus Special

Friday 18th Sep
I got diagnosed with Keracatonus earlier this year, which means the corneas of my eyes can best best described as wonky. Fortunately, it's mild in my eyes so glasses help correct it. But it's bad enough that I struggle with printed books and end up with eye strain, aka a thumping headache. So I now read on Kindle (other ereaders are available!) that is set (after a look on the Internet) up in a way that makes it easier to read. I also use Audible. And yes audiobooks count as reading. Though Audible tends to be a reread. The text on display here is the very first page of Red and Dead, book one of Violet Fenn's Netherweird Chronicles

Rincewind the overworked Kindle

First Utterances

Friday 18th Sep
I'm a pretty avid reader. I enjoy history, ghostlore, poetry and music  books, but I have a particular addiction to urban fantasy. Favourite authors there include Violet Fenn, Ben Aaronovitch, Charlaine Harris,  C K McDonnell, Eva St John, Jay Neill, Beth Dolgner, Amanda M Lee, Willa Blackmore and the list is ever growing.  I love Terry Pratchett too, though I think he is probably a genre of his own. Poetry wise, I'm a fan of Seamus Heaney, Byron, Liz Lochhead, Carol Ann Duffy, Roger McGough and Andrea Gibson in particular. I've also finally taken the plunge on the late Manchán Magan with Thirty-Two Words For Field and the new Hunter Davies Beatles book is also on the horizon. Along with some spooky reading, including both Evelyn Hollow's two books.

And all for a very worthy cause!
