Walk 31 Miles in May 2026

Join the Facebook group for Walk 31 miles in May challenge.

I'm walking 31 Miles in May for Dementia UK

This May, I'm walking 31 Miles and raising funds to help ensure no family faces dementia alone. I'm taking on the challenge for Dementia UK, the specialist dementia nursing charity, and would be grateful for your support.

Your donation, big or small, makes a difference. £33 could fund a new dementia specialist Admiral Nurse to spend an hour helping a family in the community, offering practical solutions and emotional support to cope with their loved one’s distressed behaviour.

Thank you!

My Updates

A busy night

Thursday 14th May
A very late post…..
And I didn’t do my mile today…..went to work, after changing wet bedding and putting on washing, I then went to my sanctuary after work - yoga! When I came back Roy was in my kitchen panicking because his aviary has caught fire and we need to find his eagle. My daughter was with him keeping him calm, my son had been keeping Roy distracted as he thought he was leaving to go to a hotel for a few days.
Tonight was one of those nights when we struggled to make light or rationalise anything. Roy wanted to look for his eagle he had lost in the fire. At one point he thought I was on fire and that was so frightening for him.  I know people saying homes are expensive but now it is taking two paid carers and four adults who care for him so much, to look after him.  So tonight I haven’t walked, I haven’t had any extra time…..so please help and I’ll make it up tomorrow!

A mile a day…. That’s easy

Saturday 9th May
I have heard this several times…….
When you are a full time working mum…. Do you have the time to commit to something additional everyday…..?
Well that is me again right now. Gone from an empty nester to a carer outside of my full time job.

Why did I think this was a worthy challenge?

To educate, to raise awareness, to force time out for me to think and get some headspace, to reflect on what can be done better, to raise money. If I wasn’t committed because of the money to be raised I probably would end up sidelining and not committing to the walk…….because that is what carers do - whether it’s for a new born or a 90 year old, those that cannot make their own decisions and need full time care, human nature prioritises their needs over ours.

But there are so many benefits to this -
I hear - ‘ I could do that walking around work’ - (it is in addition to my normal activities) it’s got you talking about it hasn’t it? Maybe use those thoughts to reflect on the why…….

Looking through medical notes, my mum was identified as having carers fatigue. Did she ask for help? No, because of the stigma. So if I have got you all talking about the lack of physicality in this challenge then great I have got you talking and hopefully some adult conversations will follow about the challenge of finding  time as a carer, and maybe understanding and awareness and support will follow.

The stigma

Thursday 7th May

Misunderstandings are things that are commonly misinterpreted. There are still a lot of myths and misunderstandings surrounding dementia. This could be because even though dementia affects younger people, it is normally seen by society as a condition that affects older people and older people tend to be stigmatised due to old age.

Dementia is also associated with mental health by many members of society. ‘Mental health’ is a term that is often misunderstood and frightens a lot of people. Many people are frightened by the concept of mental health and still view it in a negative way.

Day 2

Saturday 2nd May
Easy to get lost in your thoughts. 2.4 miles today and then the rain got me!

1st night warm up

Friday 1st May
Tonight, Friday, normally a wine night, is the first day of 31 miles in May. Gigi le petit frenchie was very excited. And I also roped Lee in this evening.

Life is very busy right now but when it’s too quiet I over think so I’d prefer some company. Soli walks are going to be harder than I think.

Tonight’s walk was also 2km as I haven’t figured out yet how to change my settings to miles!

Why am I doing this?

Friday 24th Apr
In January this year I unexpectedly lost my mum. Apart from being my fantastic mum she was also Roy's - her partner of 26 years - carer.

Mum and Roy had recently moved into a little place we had built for them at the bottom of my garden. Our main aim was to support mum whilst she supported Roy and also give her some respite with his increasing needs.

Roy has Parkinsons and Alzheimer's. Mum did so much for him that we were unaware of. She organised his future needs so well.... just in case anything should happen to her.

We are quickly learning the cruelness of this disease, how it can vary so much on a day to day basis. What Roy needs and how to navigate the system.

We are lucky, we are a strong family unit of now 4 adults (me hubby and a 19 & 20 year old)  and  have a can do positive, take no shit attitude. When you have dementia you lose your voice, but now Roy has a n extra 4.

Not everyone has this support and the first thought for many would have been for him to go into a home.

It doesn't have to be like that, there are options and support (not enough but there are some out there). My aim is to raise awareness of the options and money to raise accessibility to help and information to navigate this diagnosis.
