Walk 50 Miles in January 2026

I'm walking 50 Miles in January for Dementia UK

This January, I'm walking 50 Miles and raising funds to help ensure no family faces dementia alone. I'm taking on the challenge for Dementia UK, the specialist dementia nursing charity, and would be grateful for your support.

Your donation, big or small, makes a difference. £33 could fund a new dementia specialist Admiral Nurse to spend an hour helping a family in the community, offering practical solutions and emotional support to cope with their loved one’s distressed behaviour.

Thank you!

A personal message about dementia

Thursday 1st Jan
Along with losing the extra festive pounds, my motivation to do this challenge is also in memory of my beautiful mum.
Mum died 8 years ago and lived with dementia for the last year of her life. We didn’t know !
I ask myself all the time - How could we have missed the signs?
Looking back the clues were there, small changes to behaviour, forgetting to eat, phone calls at strange times, not being able to manage general everyday tasks. Mum was a proud lady and managed to plausibly explain things going wrong and cover up issues she was having whilst she was living in her own home and in familiar surroundings. However, when Mum became ill  and was admitted to hospital, being in an unfamiliar setting really  highlighted the dementia.
Working with Wetherby in Support of the Elderly has enabled me to have a greater insight into dementia and how it affects those living with it, and through the Memory Cafe sessions, allows me help in a small way .
Unfortunately, the sadness of not being able to help my own mum more will stay with me always.
