I'm walking 30 Miles in September for Dementia UK
Doing this for my dearest Nana who suffered with vascular dementia towards the end of her life, and watching it suddenly take her away from us was incredibly painful. At times she seemed trapped somewhere between the past and the present, She could become frightened, confused or angry with the people she loved most and there were moments when she was so scared of me I had to hide. I will never forget hearing her plead with God to set her free, as though she knew she was trapped inside a mind she could no longer control. Dementia affected our whole family deeply, but more than anything, it was heartbreaking to watch someone we loved so much suffer in a way none of us could fix.
