I'm walking 62 Miles in October for mum

I’m walking 62 Miles in October and raising funds so that families affected by dementia get the specialist help and advice they need. I would be grateful for your support.

This is me, my family, my memories and the reason why I’m doing ‘my part’ to raise awareness.

An £10 donation can cover the telephone costs of two families seeking support through Dementia UK's free Helpline. £33 could fund an hour with a dementia specialist Admiral Nurse, helping a family with practical solutions and emotional support.

Please see my update below for more info on mum and I and my awful poetic ramblings :-)

Thank you!

What a week

Friday 3rd Oct
Not going to lie - there were only two activities I wanted to do come 6pm 1) the arm lift (wine glass to mouth) and 2) the leg crunch (tucked under my butt on the sofa in my pj’s). Crazy week of work travel and time to relax at last - 2 miles done on the treadmill to keep on top of the numbers - might even squeeze some fresh air in come the weekend and be more ambitious distance wise 😜😱

Treadmill 1 - Glamour 0

Wednesday 1st Oct
Did I want to share a beaming pic of me in my T-shirt today - yep
Did I want to do the best outdoor walk to post on day 1 - absolutely

My reality - I was out the door at 5am  and walked in at 7pm. A hug hungry 9 year old greeted me and I needed to embrace being mum and partner in crime before the night drew to a close. If there’s one thing mums dementia has taught me, it’s where my priorities lie above and beyond all else.
I’ve plonked my tired self on a treadmill to land 2 miles consecutively along with my steps through the day and hit 3 miles in total. It’s not a glamorous day 1 but it’s authentic and honest and my mum would be proud as heck - that’s a tick for me. High five to all involved on hitting the ground running and starting what we absolutely mean to finish 👍🏻

WOW Target Hit 🥰😍😱

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Please see my post and montage of the very beautiful Jenny Conroy, my mum  🥰

What can I say about mum!!!

Tuesday 23rd Sep
Throughout my life I’ve written poetry! I’m not sure I can even call it that given its child's play basic rhyme and certainly not up there in any Poets Society League - but I always did it as a way to download my thoughts and put them in some sort of order. Somehow that made it easier to make sense of  the world in my younger years. I probably went a good 20 years without putting pen to paper but when mum was diagnosed I found myself writing and reading some to her to help explain to mum initially how I felt. Mum never accepted her diagnosis! That was a whole challenge of its own but I still shared my  thoughts and feelings when I could - knowing time will run out eventually.

Here is one I did to say a simple thank you to her. I read it to her during  one of our last independent girlie shopping trips over a cuppa in the Four Seasons shopping complex. We held hands and I told her I loved her! I’ll never stop telling her that!

How do I write an ode to you

My beautiful and wonderful friend

How do I write all your qualities down

The list would just never end

How do I tell you you’re awesome

Your strength is second to none

How do I tell you things won’t be the same

And I’m dreading the day that you’re gone

How do I tell you what’s in all our hearts

I need to be sure that you know

How do I tell you all those important things

No words left unsaid when you go

I’m not sure I know how I do that

You see words just aren’t enough

And I truly don’t want to upset you

As I know you’re still standing tough

Simply know that I admire you

I respect the person you are

I love the friendship you gave to me

And I know you will never be far

Simply know that I feel lucky

To have known a mum like you

I thank you for all the support you gave

Those tough times you got me through

Simply know you are one in a million

You are loved more than words can say

Now let’s stop this sentimental rubbish

That’s enough my friend for one day!

62 miles doesn’t sound a lot does it - unless like me you hate exercise and pretty much don’t do it full stop. Not proud of that admission but it’s the truth. For those amongst you acknowledging you do this level of activity as part of your every day norm.... I salute you for your discipline and focus to your well being and health... but right here, right now, this is not my norm by any stretch.

I’ve pondered over whether I would share any of this challenge with family and friends - in part because I’ve done walking events before and that fear a judgment of ‘more of the same’ and in part because making it public opens all the emotions for me. This however is about the beautiful, the one and only Jennifer Conroy and raising awareness and funds for an amazing cause worth shouting about  - my mum, my best friend, my inspiration in many ways and for that I’d walk 5 miles a day every day of my life for just one more conversation with her (mum is non verbal now and totally dependent)

So here I am, sharing my awkward attempts at poetic ramblings that come from a heart full of love, adoration and pride in the best mum any girl could wish for….best get those walking shoes on hadn’t I!! Yikes.
