Jog 1 Mile a Day in April

Jog 1 Mile a Day in April

I'm jogging one mile a day in May for Dementia UK

This  May, I'm jogging one mile each day and raising funds to help ensure no family faces dementia alone.

My personal  reason for doing this is because in 2019 my beautiful mum was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s at the age of 67.

As a family, it’s changed everything. Over the past six years we’ve watched how  this cruel condition is slowly taking her away from us all, month by month.  Mum, wife, nanny, auntie and friend.

I'm taking on the daily challenge for Dementia UK, the specialist dementia nursing charity, and would be grateful for your support.

I’m also doing this for my dad. His retirement has taken a completely different path, as he’s become a full time carer for his beloved wife.  No one should ever have to go through this, however by supporting Dementia UK, this enables families to continue to have support from Admiral Nurses to help cope and navigate this new life.

And finally I want to raise more awareness and break the taboo. It’s not spoken about, the disease isn’t just someone repeating themselves and losing things, there’s a whole lot more to Alzheimer’s Dementia than that. Plus early awareness of symptoms can make a huge difference with a diagnosis, we mustn’t bury our heads in the sand.

Your donation, big or small, makes a difference. Just £8 can cover the telephone costs for two families seeking support through Dementia UK's free Helpline. £33 could fund a new dementia specialist Admiral Nurse to spend an hour helping a family in the community, offering practical solutions and emotional support to cope with their loved one’s distressed behaviour.

Thank you so much. A mile a day may not seem a lot, but it’s a commitment in a busy life, so any donation will keep me motivated x

I did it!!!

Saturday 31st May
Final run in the bag! It’s been tough going every single day, but I felt amazing on this last run. The endorphins and pride I felt having raised money for this charity so close to my heart.

It all seems fitting, having spent a week in Devon with my mum and dad, change of scenery but with that brings it challenges. Having to care for someone outside of the home, but seeing the smile on her face all week, I knew she was so happy to be there with us. She kept telling me how beautiful I am (great for the self esteem! 😜) and loved looking out to the sea. A special week, good for my dad to get away too.

Thank you to each and every one of you for taking the time to sponsor me, it wasn’t a huge challenge compared to others, but relative to work commitments and lifestyle.

Day 22 ticked off, just 9 more runs to go!

Friday 23rd May
I didn’t think a mile a day would feel like much but it just shows how much we need to rest our bodies after exercise, my legs are really aching now! I probably could be better with cooling down but trying to fit in a mile a day is quite tricky at times in a busy life!

I was supposed to start this challenge in April however pushed it back to May after being wiped out with a sickness bug. May seemed a lot more  fitting, at the beginning of the month my dad ended up on crutches after fracturing his knee cap. This suddenly made everything a lot more complex. What happens when the carer needs looking after?

As a family we’ve pulled together, managing how best  to support my dad  not only physically but emotional support too. My younger brother and I having to have the hardest of discussions about what the future looks like. It just doesn’t seem  natural and often the sadness of it all weighs so heavy,  but it’s our new reality.

When I’m running, I think every day about why I’m doing this. I can’t thank you all enough for taking the time to sponsor me. This charity offers support  and advice when the world seems like it’s closing in on families like ours after a diagnosis of someone so dear to us.

Every little helps to keep the admiral nurses, the advice line, the awareness of the condition and the research going. The words of encouragement mean more than you know too, to know we have fantastic support around us and we’re not alone.

Thank you 🙏🏻

Who’d have thought just one Mile would feel tough!

Thursday 8th May
So I’ve completed day 8 and the task head seems like I may have bitten off more than I can chew 🫣 however I am determined and ALL of these lovely messages and generous donations mean so so much. My dad has fractured his knee cap so his leg is in a split this week, makes the caring process a whole lot harder which really hits home. Who cares for the carer? He’s doing ok and pretty upbeat but it makes things so much more difficult than they already are.

Thank you again and it keeps me going! Only 23 days to go 😂
