Walk 31 Miles in May 2026

I'm walking 31 Miles in May for Dementia UK

I’ve decided to take part in the 31 Miles in May challenge for Dementia UK, a charity that does amazing work to help people affected by the disease. My family and I, over recent years, have sadly become increasingly more aware of how frustrating and debilitating this disease can be.

I know 31 miles might not sound like a huge challenge to some, but for those who don’t know, I’ve been quite unwell throughout April. At times, I felt so dizzy and unstable that I couldn’t even walk from my bedroom to the bathroom without help, and I haven’t stepped outside my home for nearly four weeks.

So, this challenge is not only about raising funds—it’s also about raising awareness. If you can, please sponsor me or help spread the word. Every bit of support means so much!

My Updates

Thank you I did it!

Sunday 31st May
THANK YOU! 🌟 I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who sponsored and supported me during my “Walking 31 Miles in May for Dementia UK” challenge. I committed to a dedicated walk every single day—separate from my usual daily steps like shopping or chores. In the end, I’ve walked a total of 70 miles! That’s over 206,078 steps, at an average speed of 1.8mph (yes, I kept stopping to take photos—oops!). My phone is now packed with pictures of random paths, but every step was worth it. Some days it was tough, especially when life was busy, but I’m so glad I kept going. No matter how much I ached, the walks were always rewarding. Let’s keep the conversation going! Spread the word about dementia and why this challenge and others matter. Thank you all so much.

By the seaside

Saturday 30th May
May 29th yesterday walk was by the sea, the tide was dropping and slowly showing the rock pools which took all my effort to stay away from and continue my walk. Everything felt like a much slower relaxed pace of life as the day was coming to an end. It was lovely seeing others clambering amongst the rock pools and finding the secret within!

Early start

Wednesday 27th May
Set off early today to get out and back before the heat of the day became too much for me. There was a small breeze which made the walk quite pleasant saw hundreds of caterpillars hatching which I never seen before! And got another 2 miles ticked off.

To hot to go anywhere

Monday 25th May
I decided to stay on the campsite today and take a walk from there , didn’t go far as it was so hot! me and hot weather don’t mix🥵🥵🥵 but I still managed to get 1.7 miles in but then it was off to find some shade and cool down 🤪

Dementia UK T-shirt day

Sunday 24th May
Today was a day by the sea walking along the promenade taking in the sites!!!!! Then back to our campsite and lovely extra walk at the end of the day round the farm sheep’s, lambs, pigs, donkey’s, turkeys, chickens and so much more. Another lovely day by the coast.

By the sea

Saturday 23rd May
Yesterday’s walk was an early one around the marina before going fishing. Which was about the only thing that went to plan yesterday but still a good day to be out and about.

Ready for the weekend

Wednesday 20th May
Helped my dad set up his caravan today in East Sussex so I took the opportunity to walk some where different while I was there, overcast and very very windy a cross the marshes but not cold nice walk hope to get some more walks in, in Sussex over the next couple of weeks.

Not much to report

Tuesday 19th May
After the weekend, yesterday and today’s walks have been at a slow plod and rather unremarkable. It’s always good to get out for a walk but they  were short walks near to home. Tomorrow I will do better, and remember to take some pictures.

Alpacas fishing and chickens!

Sunday 17th May
I was volunteering today on the Whose Hoo stand at an alpaca farm, which had chickens as well! so when I took my break I took the opportunity to get my walk in along the Grain coastal path to get away from everyone for a bit of peace and quiet, Big sky’s, people fishing and a bass was caught while I was there, now that’s a good break and a very successful walk.

Something a bit different

Saturday 16th May
Today I took part in a guided walk at Northward Hill RSPB nature reserve, where we heard nightingale singing and cuckoo calling throughout the walk, we also saw Marsh Harriers, Cattle Egrets, shelduck, lapwings and so much more. The walk also took us to an archaeological dig where they were finding Roman pottery and evidence of salt working. It was a very interesting and different kind of walk.

Keep calm and carry on…

Friday 15th May
I looked outside and it looked cold, uninviting and as if it could rain any moment, so with jeans, T-shirt, jumper and raincoat on I set off for my walk… I was most definitely overdressed, it wasn’t cold and it didn’t rain, and I was way too warm! I did find the above air freshener hanging on a post at a particularly up hill part of my walk, so of course I had to photograph it while I pretended not to be out of breath, you know in case anyone was looking and thought I needed medical assistance 😳

Well it had to happen at some point

Thursday 14th May
I didn’t go far today and kept my walk close to home, just as well as halfway through,  it rained and it’s been raining ever since! I Made it home a little soggier than when I left,  but still glad I got out for my walk.

Not far today

Wednesday 13th May
Just a quick walk today, if I’m honest I wasn’t feeling it I walked about half a mile and everything ached and I kept thinking about other things I needed to be doing. I couldn’t tune out and just enjoy the walk, so turned round and went home and got on with the jobs.

Top of the Downs

Tuesday 12th May
Trosley Country Park was where my walk took me today, on yesterday's walk I was looking across to the North Downs today I was walking on top of them, lots of robins and squirrels about and plenty of bird song, with the loudest bird of them all being a blackcap. 🎶

Race to beat the rain

Monday 11th May
It was a race to get out and back before the rain came this morning, so a quicker than usual walk with a lot less photos taken a long the way! But I did snap this one of the north downs, with the darker clouds starting to build.

It’s been years since I’ve been to a boot fair

Sunday 10th May
Today it was over to Upnor to go to a boot fair, once again I wasn’t looking for anything but needed a reason to get out on a grey, windy and chilly day and go for a walk, the boot fair was huge and felt like the rows of stalls went on for ever, but I think it was the zig zagging around all the people that made it feel that way, much busier than expected especially as everyone was complaining about how cold it was🥶  I didn’t take any pictures today as I was more keen on keeping my hands warm in my pockets.

from Walmer Castle to the end of Deal pier

Saturday 9th May
What a lovely day by the seaside, I took a trip out today to do my walk and set off from Walmer Castle heading for Deal Castle, but couldn’t resist walking a little further to the end of Deal pier where I sat for a bit and watched a group of guys fishing, not much caught other than a few dogfish! Lovely weather sunny but breezy a few white tops out at sea but a nice breeze for keeping me cool while striding back to the car at Walmer Castle.

A Simple Walk to the Farm Shop: When Looks Are Deceiving

Friday 8th May
Today, I decided to walk to the local farm shop. I didn’t actually need anything—but I wanted a destination, a goal for my stroll. I find it easier if I have a target to reach, something to aim for. Of course, as soon as I arrived, I couldn’t resist picking up a punnet of fresh raspberries; it would have been rude not to. It’s funny how a simple walk can turn into a little treat. What caught me off guard, though, was the walk itself. It looked like an easy, flat route—one of those paths you can just plod along. Somehow, though, it managed to be uphill not by much but both ways. How is that even possible? I still can’t figure it out. So, note to self: Looks can be deceiving, especially when it comes to countryside walks. Next time, I’ll be prepared for the unexpected inclines, no matter how small.

Pit stop en route

Thursday 7th May
My walk today took in the quintain at Offham then on to spadework’s for breakfast and coffee with mum and dad. Well no one said this couldn’t be enjoyable 🙂 Spadework’s is a charity that also supports people living with dementia, as well as their families and carers, with a variety of different services. These include memory cafes, singing groups, music and movement groups, carers support groups and a specific support group for people with young-onset dementia. You do not need a formal diagnosis to join in, and most services are free.

Keeping it local

Wednesday 6th May
Today’s walk was a circular walk a long some local lanes, where I spotted this lovely Honeysuckle which brightened up a dull day. It took a bit to get motivated today, but once I was out I really enjoyed it.

Lovely walk in leafy green lanes

Tuesday 5th May
A lovely walk with the sun shining through the leaves, slightly cooler than previous days which I found to be better for walking. But I made the mistake of making the last part of the walk up hill🤣 I’m getting my cardio in!

The 4th of May walk

Monday 4th May
Today’s walk was along the main road, so not as exciting, but still good to be out walking and raising money for Dementia UK

The Long Man sorry day late in posting

Monday 4th May
May 3rd, My walk to the Long Man Of Wilmington, lovely sunny day with some fantastic views. It was a lovely walk good to push myself with the up hill part and walked beyond my target of the Long Man.

Early start

Friday 1st May
May 1st, first walk, early start to see in the spring. Watched the Morris Dancers dancing round Jack then off for a walk, some fantastic views and a close encounter with a fox, beautiful bird song, and accordion music in the background of it all.

It all starts tomorrow

Thursday 30th Apr
Tomorrow will be my first day of walking 31 miles for Dementia UK, and I will kick it off at 4.30am ish at the top of Bluebell Hill, where the Morris dancers gather to celebrate the 1st of May.  This will be the start of a very busy weekend of May Day celebrations the weather is looking a little dodgy but that won’t stop me getting my miles in.

If you know someone with Dementia don’t forget to include them in the conversation, sometimes patience and empathy is needed but it’s worth it to see them smile, keep the sentences short, maintain eye contact, give them time to respond avoid saying “don’t you remember” and smile, we all need a friendly face.

Well done Kay! Our family have seen the effects dementia can have, sadly and slowly affecting my grandmother until she passed away earlier this year. Thankfully she did not have it as severe as many do, but heartbreaking for families seeing their loved ones slowly slip away, so hard. So a good charity to support & thank you for sharing your journey, some of the photos I saw you shared were lovely x
