Walk 50 Miles in January 2026

I'm walking 50 Miles in January for Dementia UK

This January, I'm walking 50 Miles and raising funds to help ensure no family faces dementia alone. I'm taking on the challenge for Dementia UK, the specialist dementia nursing charity, and would be grateful for your support.

Your donation, big or small, makes a difference. £33 could fund a new dementia specialist Admiral Nurse to spend an hour helping a family in the community, offering practical solutions and emotional support to cope with their loved one’s distressed behaviour.

Thank you!

Mum’s Dementia Journey

Tuesday 6th Jan
Doing this challenge is in memory of my mum and her journey through Dementia. I’ve not talked much about what mum and those around her went through but going to share this with you.

This is just but one story of many who are or have dealt with loved ones who have/had  Dementia.

Christmas 2011 is where it started to unfold the significant changes in mums behaviour. Mum was spending Christmas with me (which she had done many times before) and was travelling from Glasgow to Southampton by plane.

The night before mum stayed with her sister and had been quite stressed, uptight and worried about the weather, missing the plane, the times of the flight, etc and her sister spent the time reassuring her it would be all right.  Mum had always been an avid traveller over the years often visiting Australia so this change of behaviour was unlike her.

Next day Mum checked in to her flight and got to Southampton airport and I was there to meet her.  She came through the arrivals okay but I had to send her back through as she didn’t pick up her luggage. I knew something wasn’t right……

Christmas 2011 with mum was really enjoyable, special and we laughed so much reminiscing the good old days. If I was to give advice to people going through the horrible disease I would write down the stories as I wish I had.

Christmas dinner I got mum to help and it was sad to see some basic skills of cooking she had forgotten how to do. I didn’t say anything as I knew she had times of frustration. Instead I put some music on and we danced around the kitchen and made mum smile

I was sad when mum had to go home but I knew 2012 would mean several trips to see her and Dr appointments to be made ….

2012 I made several visits to see her in Scotland and where she was staying in Independent Living flat I asked the management to keep an eye on her for me.

Summer 2012 I managed to convince mum to go to the Drs with me as I knew they could do a quick GP memory test, often the GPCOG (General Practitioner Assessment of Cognition).

It’s is a quick, initial screening using pen-and-paper questions about memory, orientation (time/place), and concentration, plus a clock-drawing task, to see if further investigation for dementia is needed. It can't diagnose dementia but flags issues to the Dr.

Needless to say the test results weren’t great.

Next Steps: Dr agreed the results are concerning, and agreed he would refer mum to a specialist memory clinic for detailed scans and diagnosis.

I would like to thank everyone so far who has supported me and donated via the link. Every bit will help Dementia UK, the specialist dementia nursing charity to help those affected by this disease

I remember your mum so fondly from your wedding and your strength through her dementia journey so clearly. Then you taught us the importance of putting things in place (like power of attorney) just in case. Now it's humbling to read your stories and insights Thank you for everything you are doing. Care and research into dementia is woefully underfunded. Enjoy every step Rachel x
