Walk 31 Miles in May 2026

Join the Facebook group for Walk 31 miles in May challenge.

I'm walking 31 Miles in May for Dementia UK

This May, I'm walking 31 Miles and raising funds to help ensure no family faces dementia alone. I'm taking on the challenge for Dementia UK, the specialist dementia nursing charity, and would be grateful for your support.

Your donation, big or small, makes a difference. £33 could fund a new dementia specialist Admiral Nurse to spend an hour helping a family in the community, offering practical solutions and emotional support to cope with their loved one’s distressed behaviour.

Thank you!

The Challenge is for us all 💙

Friday 29th May

One thing I’ve been learning through spending time with someone living with dementia is that the challenge isn’t only their change.

It’s ours.

The dynamics that may have existed for decades no longer work in quite the same way.

We can find ourselves expecting the same reactions, the same capabilities, the same roles and responsibilities as before.

But reality has changed.

And often the most helpful question becomes:

“How do I need to change to help this situation work?”

Recently, I found myself in a situation that felt rushed, stressful and overwhelming for everyone involved.

Nothing dramatic happened.

Nobody was at their best.

But instead of trying to make things happen perfectly, I focused on staying calm, solving one problem at a time and helping where I could.

Dinner still happened.

Everyone still ate.

The world didn’t end.

Sometimes care isn’t about fixing everything.

Sometimes it’s simply about bringing a little more calm to a situation that feels chaotic.

That may be one of the most valuable lessons dementia can teach all of us.

💙

What can make a difference 💙

Wednesday 27th May

One thing this experience has reminded me is how unsettling and confusing dementia can sometimes feel for those living with it.

And often, the biggest difference comes from very human things:
patience,
calmness,
familiarity,
music,
reassurance,
and simply helping someone feel safe.

Sometimes even a slow drive while listening to songs they know and love can bring comfort and connection.

That’s also why support for families and carers matters so much. Dementia doesn’t only affect one person — it affects everyone around them too.

Update 27 May 2026
