I'm walking 62 Miles in October

I’m walking 62 Miles in October and raising funds so that families affected by dementia get the specialist help and advice they need. I would be grateful for your support.

An £10 donation can cover the telephone costs of two families seeking support through Dementia UK's free Helpline. £33 could fund an hour with a dementia specialist Admiral Nurse, helping a family with practical solutions and emotional support.

Our wonderful mother Dorothy passed away in June 2022 aged 84. She had been  living with dementia since she was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia following Atrial Fibrillation in her early 60s. Mum lost my dad when he was 40 and brought myself and my brother up on her own. She lived a very tough life only to get dementia when she should have been enjoying her retirement and living life for herself. She was an absolutely wonderful, mum and grandmother. I feel we lost her twice, once to dementia and again when she passed.  I am taking on this challenge to support Dementia UK and will be grateful of any help.

Thank you!

Dementia UK Walking Challenge Update

Tuesday 14th Oct
So I decided to do the Cleveland Way, 110 miles in October.  Mum loved the area, born and bred in Cleveland. So what better way to remember her while walking the places she loved. So,  I am 40 mile in and the next stage  is Clay Bank taking me to Roseberry Topping and onto Kildale. Followed by a stage by Guisborough before I head to Saltburn.  (and mums favourite fish and chips). If only I was allowed.   Thanks to all those who have supported me. If any one wishes to sponsor me tomorrow on the 15th October I will receive double the donation.  Thank you again. PS I am loving the outdoors and walking with the memories of a wonderful person, my Mum.

Got the walking bug!

Tuesday 7th Oct
Thank you all  who have supported me.  I have reached my target of £500. So I have decided to increase the target for the walk (now I have the bug) and thought I would walk the Cleveland Way.  Why ? I will pass all the sights and places where Mum was born, lived, worked and places she took me and my brother to day trips and outings.  Lovely memories of a fabulous mum! Starting with Helmsley outdoor swimming pool. The start of the Cleveland Way and where Mum used to take us in the summer. I can't believe it is still there!!! 107 miles to Filey.....!

Day 1 Redcar to Saltburn

Wednesday 1st Oct
Had a great day with Ted the schnauzer walking from Mum's birthplace at Redcar along  the beach she loved to Saltburn by the Sea. We stopped at the pier where we used to take Mum on outings to have fish and chips, her favourite meal in the later years with her Dementia.  Called in at Locke Park where she would take me and my brother when visiting Grandad and Grandma and visited the church at Kirkleatham, where she married Dad and where we held her funeral 3 years ago. Great day to kick start my 62 miles in October.

Training walk with complications

Monday 22nd Sep
Out with Ted and Pops to day....  and had to go through some brown stuff.... of the smelly variety!

Remembering Mum

Saturday 20th Sep
Dorothy Roberts , mum to Michael and myself was diagnosed with vascular dementia in her mid sixties following an atrial fibrillation diagnosis. She lost her husband  Bill  when he was 4o and mum was  35. She never remarried and brought up me and my brother  up on her own. We never wanted for anything with mum always  putting us, and our families first. Mum struggled with dementia for  many years and finally passed away at 84 in June 2022.  I feel we lost mum twice. First to dementia and then finally when she passed  away.  I am trying to raise a minimum of £250 to support Dementia Uk and hope you will be able to support me . Thank you all for any contribution you can make.
