Walk 30 Miles in September 2026

30 miles for Dementia UK

Hi!

I am doing this to be doing something proactive when I am unable to do anything to help my Mum who is living with Dementia.  I lose a little of her every time I see her. It's like her dying over and over.  I hate that she can't recall so much and is so confused and distressed much of the time when not reassured of her surroundings etc.

I am not a fit person and am also obese, so walking 30 miles is something that will test me, especially as I intend to do this on top of any usual daily walking.

Thank you for looking at the link and for reading this.  If you decide to support me and the cause, then another thank you!

I have started it today (as it's nearly September!) and walked 1.75miles today.

God bless#

Joanna

My Updates

The Last Lap

Wednesday 30th Sep
Here we are on the final day of the September Challenge and it is done.  Thank you to all who have supported me with prayer, with encouragement and with financial support for the charity.   Whilst I have not achieved multiples of the walking target, the financial target of the original £175 has been well and truly blitzed into oblivion,  and will make an unmeasurable difference to so many going forward.  For you, darling Mum. God bless you.

Necessary Grouting

Saturday 26th Sep
Having not been able to get out much for my usual walk at lunch, today I walked 2.47 miles clocking up a total of 28.50.  As it's 26th today, that's not much in the bank really but it's OK.  I met with a friend and was telling her how I feel I am like the grouting  in between the tiles in most situations, and of this I am very proud.  I am the in between. I am the unnoticed some of the time and do the unseen much of the time.  The soft skills and housekeeping things that we forgot or don't notice but just happen.  I am meant to be the grouting and I want to be necessary.  I can be necessary even when you don't realise you need what I bring.  Thank you Lord.

3 yellow cars and a front door to giggle at

Monday 21st Sep
my walk today wasn't long. It was more functional than frivolous in order to get the miles in, although I only did 1.22 miles.  Busy day at work and so I was exhausted just from looking for crockery (long story).  However, a bit of sunshine, some bright yellow vehicles and a funny sign on a front door was well received.
Please help me get to £1500! Every little bit makes a difference. No donation is too small....thank you!

A Cloud for Tanya

Thursday 17th Sep
today I decided to walk a little further and look at the clouds. Not at the same time of course as I don't think I would be here typing this if that had been the case!! 1.67 miles....only a tiny bit more that then 1.54 but it's still more.   New trainers on. Seem to work. Haven't taken them off yet.  Clouds are my favourite things.  Magical. Beautiful. Fluffy. Energetic. Tranquil. Calm. Peaceful. Wondrous. Fantastical. .....and as we all know, do not or would not feel anything like you imagine them to feel.   Gorgeous day.

New Walking Shoes!!

Wednesday 16th Sep
Banked another 1.54 miles today with a lunch time stride and came home to these gorgeous "barefoot" shoes.  I have a colleague at work who told me I will never want to wear anything else, which I hope is not the case because I love my green boots and my other shoes.  That said, I want to be able to tackle rubbly and wonky pathed walks, so these might be the answer.   My feet hurt and my legs often hurt.  The small of my back aches. BUT this challenge is worth it and I thank you all again for the support both financial and verbal.  Keep doing it and keep me going.  22.84 miles in the bank. God is good!!

21.30 miles and a Yellow Car

Tuesday 15th Sep
My children and I used to, and still do it seems, play "yellow car" when out and about.  You have to be the first to see and say "yellow car" when you do see a yellow car.  There have been recent debates over Gold being yellow or not, orangey yellow being yellow or not and lately an attempt by my 20 yr old to claim a yellow bus was a yellow car.   Fun.  So I did a walk at lunch today and spotted this car.  Definitely yellow and approx 1.54 miles walked today.

Up to 19.76 miles in the Sept Bank.

Saturday 12th Sep
It's so important to count the tiny increments because "every little really does count".  I only get out during the working week for a mile and a little bit but it helps to keep on top of the challenge and to get some air.  I am notoriously bad at taking a break. I like what I do too much so I eat at my desk usually and am graced with this challenge and the fact it's PUBLIC so that I do take that break.  Thanks again to all who have donated. I still want to reach £1500 so if you feel able.....every little bit counts!  My father in law passed this week at age 93 and he walked and walked for as long as he was able to do so.  He may have had a little dementia at the end but thankfully was not living with it like my Mum is.  So for all those who deal with and live with Dementia in any way at all, please help me reach £1500.  Mucho Gracias!

4.14 miles and a race against the clock

Sunday 6th Sep
today walked with Jana from Brambridge to Shawford and was too worried about falling into the Itchen at several spots on the way, to spend too much time looking around, although we did stop to chat to some sheep on the way.  Pitstop at The Bridge pub for some refreshment and the chat got carried away so we had to race back (as much as "race" was possible for me) because the cars would have been locked in at the Garden Centre if we hadn't made it by 5pm.  So with the Holy Spirit in the soles of my sore feet and also in my aching legs, we made it by 4.45pm.   No time for pictures but this from is apt.  I did do better than I thought I could. Thank you Jesus.

Thank you also to more donations.  I've got to hit £1500 now.....too close not to.

a stroll and a possible death wish x 2

Saturday 5th Sep
today being Saturday, and having arranged a coffee and cake outing for some church friends, I decided to walk.  The sun was shine and the Garden Society is not far away. Approximately 1.2ish miles to be precise depending on the route.  I took my life in my hands probably more than twice on the short stretch without pathway, when numerous cars in a hurry and one not so hurried horse and carriage went past.   Yes I was praying as I walked, because....well why not.  Some of the time I was singing but the cars kept interrupting me because I had to say thank you each time one didn't hit me!!  Lovely morning though. Thank you God.

Ickle increment to 1.2 miles

Wednesday 2nd Sep
managed to get out again at lunch time and beat any rain clouds with a half hour walk of just over a mile.  Had it been that horrid drizzly rain that came later, I might not have been so keen amidst the windy wind but fortunately the weather was in my favour.

Lunchtime Launch

Tuesday 1st Sep
It's not unusual to go for a walk at lunch except if you are me, who usually clocks out for 30 mins and works through.  I love my job and am reluctant to upset the flow, but today I did upset it.  I launched the one mile walk which only takes me 30 mins, and no doubt that will reduce as I progress, given I am getting better at this walking malarkey.   One mile today.....maybe two by the end of the week.  You never know!!

Exbury Gardens and 2.6 miles

Monday 31st Aug
What a lovely few hours at Exbury Gardens in the New Forest. Sun shining, lots of bubbly clouds in the sky and a gorgeous wind to keep me cool. God is good!

Fundraising

Sunday 30th Aug
I started with a target of £175 and inched it up to £350 and then £550, and look where we are now!! £1004.00.  I am overwhelmed with the support this cause has had, not to mention me.  Thank you each and every one of you.

walk numero three

Saturday 29th Aug
Just round the block really. 1.39 miles. It's enough for me at the moment. Managed to dodge the rain too.  More support coming in. Thank you so much lovely people whom I am privileged to know.

out and about again

Thursday 27th Aug
my maths is appalling so you will have to check I am adding up correctly, but last night's walk was 1.66 miles.  My legs are not happy, particularly my left one, so this walking business isn't the easy peasy business it could be, but with every step, I am doing it for Mum. She is the one living in a world she doesn't know.  I thank God that she does know Him and can dwell in His arms eventually.

My first stint

Monday 24th Aug
