I'm walking 30 miles in September

I’m walking 30 Miles in September and raising funds for families affected by dementia. I would be grateful for your support.

An £8 donation could cover the telephone costs of two families seeking support through Dementia UK's free Helpline. £33 could fund an hour with a dementia specialist Admiral Nurse, helping a family with practical solutions and emotional support.

Thank you!

Final walk - Meanwood Park

Tuesday 30th Sep
I did my final walk for the challenge today. I chose to walk around Meanwood Park. Partly because I wanted somewhere different and partly because it holds a lot of memories, making it special.

Meanwood Park is a place I went to as a child with various family members. I have since taken my children on my own, and with friends and family. One of those is one of the people inspiring me to do the challenge. Lots of bits brought back memories of different visits.

I saw more himalayan balsam again. This time in a large group, as well as some individual plants. As previously said, it's a special plant because it brings back memories of being shown how to make the seed pods pop. This was done by the same person who inspired me to do the challenge. It may even have been in this park that I was shown. It felt like it was cheering me on the walk.

On the walk, I also saw squirrels, fairy mushrooms and a few robins, one of which let me get quite a close.

My walk today was 2.5 miles. My final total is 42 miles.

Otley Chevin

Monday 29th Sep
On Saturday, I went for a walk with family and friends on Otley Chevin. We had a nice walk with lots of time spent clambering on rocks by the kids (and some of the adults). I found some more hymalayan balsam plants and introduced my friends to them. The seed pods were more ripe this time, so quite a few were popping when we touched them.
We also spotted some mushrooms, including ones like in a fairy tail, and a frog.

Golden Acre Park

Thursday 25th Sep
Today I went for a short walk around Golden Acre Park. The sun was shining and it was a quiet peaceful walk. I enjoyed seeing all the familiar bits on the route that I have enjoyed with my family, immediate and extended.

This walk, along with a local walk from my house, means my total is now up to 33 miles.

30 miles!

Tuesday 23rd Sep
I've done it! I've reached 30 miles. Today I did a short walk, just from the house, around my local area. It was 1 mile, and was what I needed to reach the goal of 30 miles in September. I'm pleased I managed it before the end of September and I plan to do a few more miles, just to see how many I can do with the time I've got.

Cow and Calf Walk

Monday 22nd Sep

Cow and Calf Walk

Monday 22nd Sep
Today I did another longer walk. I met up with my sister and we did a circular walk on Ilkley Moor, including seeing the cow and calf rocks.
The weather was good. We had sunshine and, although a little cool at times, we kept warm by walking. Despite recent rain, most of the paths were dry and clear, apart from near the end where I slipped over on some mud. Fortunately no injuries, just some slightly muddy trousers.
This walk was just under 4.5 miles, taking my total to 29 miles. Almost at my total with 8 days to go. I will continue to do walking after I hit my target, just to see how much I can do.

Headingley Walk

Friday 19th Sep
I decided for today's walk I'd walk to the craft group I go to.

The first half of the walk wasn't very interesting, mainly walking through housing estates, but then I got to walk through some playing fields and park, which was nice. The park was a special one because I'd visited it a lot as a child with family, and have visited a few times with my own children.

After looking at Google maps in advance, I very much underestimated it to be about 3 miles, taking into account some short cuts Google maps didn't know about. However, it turned out to be 4.5 miles, taking me a bit longer than expected, but at least it bumped up my total, which is now 25 miles.

Crag House Farm Walk

Thursday 18th Sep
Today I went for a longer walk to, and around, Crag House Farm. It's was a nice sunny and peaceful walk, going past fields on my way. After a quick look around the farm shop, I went for a walk down through the gardens to the pond.
It's my longest walk at 2.6 miles, bringing my total to 20 miles.

Halfway Point

Monday 15th Sep
I'm halfway through my fundraising challenge. I have done a few shorter walks since my last post, mainly due to lack of time and/or bad weather. I have enjoyed being in the local area though, seeing woods, playing fields and green areas.
Later this week the weather is looking better, so I'm hoping to do a longer walk or 2. My total is 15 miles

Hymalayan Balsam

Monday 8th Sep
The plant mentioned in my Paul's Pond Circular walk post

Paul's Pond Circular

Monday 8th Sep
Today I did a circular walk to Paul's pond. It was a nice, peaceful walk in the sunshine. There was a nice mixture of open areas, woods and the pond. Lots of nice scenery to look at.

Whilst on the walk, I found a plant that had extra special meaning. According to an app, it's called hymalayan balsam. It has a particular smell and pink flowers, but the special thing about it is that it has seed pods that pop when touched, showering the seeds around. I was shown this plant by one of the people that inspired me to do the walk. I have a fond memory of being shown how to get the seed pods to pop and the fun we had making them pop. Unfortunately the pods weren't quite ready to be popped yet, but they're not far off.  I'll add a photo of it and some from the walk in the gallery or as an update (I'm still learning to navigate this website)

The walk today was 2 miles, taking my total up to 8 miles.

The Two Towers

Sunday 7th Sep
I went on a quest today, not to destroy a ring, but to raise money for charity. I didn't see any hobbits, elves, dwarves wizards or the eye of Sauron though. It was disappointing in that regard (apart from the lack of Sauron). One more mile down, 6 miles in total.

Having had a busy week this last week, I'm looking forward to doing some longer walks this week coming

School pick up

Friday 5th Sep
I walked did the school pick up on foot today, which was 1.5 miles. (Dementia UK has rounded it up to 2.)  I got to walk through the woods I went through yesterday, which makes the walk more pleasant, although I didn't have to fight my way through the big bush like yesterday.

Walk 3

Thursday 4th Sep
I managed a quick bonus walk this afternoon due to not having the car for school pick up, which has added an extra mile to my total. I'm pretty much back on track now for doing a mile a day.

Walk in the woods

Thursday 4th Sep
After a couple of very busy days due to birthday and back to school related stuff, I managed to get back to walking.

For my second walk I went to some nearby woods, which gave me some shelter when it rained a bit. The path I came back through was a bit overgrown, but I was able to push past the bushes. However, this turned out to be a bit of a mistake because the bushes were wet and so I got wet in the end anyway.

Today's walk was slightly longer at 1.5 miles according to strava, although the fundraising page has counted it as 2. Next week I hope to do some longer walks to make up the days I've missed.

First walk

Monday 1st Sep
I did my first 1 mile walk today. It was a slow start to my fundraising because I had the children with me, so we stopped at a playground for most of it. Probably a good way to ease me into it. I hope to do some longer walks some days depending on how much time I have.
