Walk 50 Miles in January 2026

I'm walking 50 Miles in January for Dementia UK

This January, I'm walking 50 Miles and raising funds for Dementia UK.

In addition to your money going to a good cause, by doing this, I might also reduce the size of my massive wine-tummy.......

Thank you for your support.

50 Miles done !

Friday 30th Jan
Just managed to complete the 50 mile target one day early !
Very happy about this, as my spinal disc/leg thing has reoccurred.
Oh well.
Thank you for all your support !
James.

28th January - 47.5 Miles

Thursday 29th Jan
Hi,
I doubt anyone is reading this, but if you are, I am pleased to let you know that I reached 47.5 miles as of yesterday, 28th January.
I'm on target to hit the 50 mile mark by month end as planned.
I'm quite pleased about this.
And thank you to everyone who has sponsored me, I really appreciate your kindness.
James.

Monday 19th January - Distance Update

Monday 19th Jan
Despite a slow start at the beginning of the month, I am on target to achieve the 50 mile distance by the end of January.
Tracking with an App called Pacer.

50 Miles might not seem like a lot to you, but......

Thursday 15th Jan
It is to me.
I was unable to walk properly from March to September 2025 due to a spinal disc issue.
I had a nerve root block procedure in late September and am only just getting more freedom of movement back.
Not being able to walk, move, lie flat, etc., with such a high pain level for this extended period was  difficult.
So.....50 miles for me is quite a challenge.

Why did I decide to do this ? (Part II)

Saturday 3rd Jan
Put simply,  to get out of the house every day.

I was made redundant in September and since then, my only reasons for going out have been to walk the dog, visit the supermarket and fulfil my role as a taxi-driver for my daughter.

By the way, she has suggested that if it's raining, I join a gym and walk on a treadmill to get the miles in, as I won't be able to 'deal with my baldy head getting wet...'. I'm not convinced that she is being supportive.

Walking 50 miles.......

Why did I decide to do this ? (Part I)

Friday 2nd Jan
I decided to sign-up to this 50 mile challenge because this is a cause that is relevant to me, as I had close family members that were diagnosed with dementia.

It worries me that there has been such a lack of investment in research, new treatments and support infrastructure in the UK, even though it's clear to everyone  that we have a rapidly growing ageing population.   The maths are simple: the problems for those with dementia and also for their carers (usually family members) are going to become  untenable.

The Conservative Government simply sat on their hands for 15 years and failed us all.

I'll do this walk, even though I am unfit, have a wine-belly, a long-term medical condition and a generally irascible disposition.

I'll do it because it'll help those who help others.

This is a vital charity. My Mum was diagnosed with dementia two years ago and it’s been a devastating journey. So thank you for doing this! We need to raise awareness and money for research is desperately needed. Good luck James!
