Winter Reading Challenge

I'm doing Winter Reading Challenge for Dementia UK

This winter, I'm reading and raising funds to help ensure no family faces dementia alone. I'm taking on the challenge for Dementia UK, the specialist dementia nursing charity, and would be grateful for your support.

Your donation, big or small, makes a difference. £33 could fund a new dementia specialist Admiral Nurse to spend an hour helping a family in the community, offering practical solutions and emotional support to cope with their loved one’s distressed behaviour.

Thank you!

Review #1: The Things We Leave Unfinished - Rebecca Yarros

Wednesday 23rd Sep
📚 Book: The Things We Leave Unfinished - Rebecca Yarros

📚 Genre: Historical Fiction/Romance

📚 Synopsis: Set on a dual timeline between current day Colorado and World War II England, the story follows Georgia Stanton, granddaughter of acclaimed romance author Scarlett Stanton. After her grandmother's death (not a spoiler 😂), Georgia sets out to publish the one story her grandmother never managed to finish - a manuscript that until now existed only as pages typed on her typewriter, documenting her life during the war and how she came to meet the love of her life. She enlists the help of bestselling romance author, Noah Harrison, to finish the story, and as the manuscript comes to life, it becomes clear that there was much more to Scarlett's story than Georgia ever knew.

📚 My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️( and a 1/2)
While I really liked the storyline of this one and loved the plot twist near the end, it just fell a little short of what I think it could have been. For me, the flashbacks to Scarlett and Jameson's story during the war weren't quite as realistically captured as other books I've read based during that period (Kristin Hannah's The Nightingale springs to mind), and the way the characters spoke was too similar to that of conversations between Georgia and Noah in the chapters that were based in the current day. In theory the story should have had me crying my eyes out at parts (I cry at everything!) but I really struggled to feel the emotions the characters would have been feeling and unfortunately I think that was down to the author's writing style and choice of words. Overall it's a decent read and has a 4 star rating on Goodreads so maybe it's just me, but it just left me feeling disappointed that I didn't like it more! On to the next...

Book 1 of the Winter Reading Challenge

Sunday 20th Sep
Hi all 👋

This winter, I’m taking part in Dementia UK’s Winter Reading Challenge, which I just had to get involved in as it’s a cause that’s very close to my family’s heart ❤️

I already had a goal to get out of my reading rut this year, and now I’ve set myself the challenge of reading 11 more books before the end of the year, taking my total to 26 books for 2026, while raising money to support people living with dementia and their families 📚

Anything you can spare for this important cause would be hugely appreciated, and I’ll share progress updates and my thoughts on the books I read along the way, just in case anyone is looking for some reading recommendations!

Book number 1 of the challenge is The Things We Leave Unfinished by Rebecca Yarros 📖✨️
