I'm swimming for Dementia UK

I have several family members and friends that have been affected by this wicked disease. So I'm taking on a 30-Day Swimming Challenge and raising funds to help ensure no family faces dementia alone. This is for Dementia UK, the specialist dementia nursing charity, and would be grateful for your support.

Your donation, big or small, makes a difference. £33 could fund a new dementia specialist Admiral Nurse to spend an hour helping a family in the community, offering practical solutions and emotional support to cope with their loved one’s distressed behaviour.
Thank you All.
Love Howie ❤️

My Updates

I've done it.

Monday 10th Aug
Dear All
Just wanted to thank you all for your support during my charity swim challenge. I've now completed the 30k distance and raised over £450. I  received a phone call from Dementia UK thanking me for everything, as the amount raised will definitely make a difference to the lives of people experiencing dementia in Alzheimers.
Thanks again
Howie x

Will carry on beyond time limited challenge

Tuesday 7th Jul
Managed to get back in the pool tonight. Not going to be able to complete 30k in 30 days but will carry on beyond 8 July until I reach 30k. Thanks again for your support x

Another swim break

Wednesday 1st Jul
I won't be swimming for a few days as needed to travel back to Norfolk to collect dad from hospital and support his recovery  following surgery.  Will get back in the pool when I return to Cov!

A bit behind now...

Saturday 27th Jun
Haven't been able to swim as often as planned as Dad ended up having surgery and is still in hospital, so I'm looking after mum who has dementia. That means I'm behind where I want to be with the swimming challenge. I've done 11k with 10 days to go. So I plan to continue swimming beyond the 30 day challenge to meet the target of 30k. I will do it!...

Back to it!!

Saturday 20th Jun
My first swim for a week.  Family circumstances meant that I needed to travel back to Norfolk for my parents. Dad is unwell and I needed to support mum who has dementia in Alzheimers. Irony is not lost on me. Mum is doing well and hopefully I can catch up on the swimming to reach the target of 30k. Watch this space

First time in 50m pool!

Wednesday 10th Jun
This morning I swapped my familiar 25m pool for a 50m pool and discovered that those extra 25 metres make a much bigger difference than I expected.
Arriving at 7am already felt like an achievement. The atmosphere was different from the start; quieter, more serious, and somehow more purposeful. Then I saw who I was sharing the pool with: elite athletes gliding effortlessly through the water while I tried not to look completely out of place. I am definitely not an elite athlete.
The longer pool was both exciting and daunting.  The far end seems a very long way away when your lungs start reminding you that swimming can be hard work.
At the same time, there was something satisfying about it. The swimming felt smoother and more continuous. It was challenging, tiring, but also enjoyable.
By the end of the session I was already looking forward to doing it again. Just as well really as I've signed up to 30k challenge by mistake!
