I'm walking 31 Miles in May for Dementia UK

This May, I'm walking 31 Miles and raising funds to help ensure no family faces dementia alone. I'm taking on the challenge for Dementia UK, the specialist dementia nursing charity, and would be grateful for your support.

Your donation, big or small, makes a difference. £33 could fund a new dementia specialist Admiral Nurse to spend an hour helping a family in the community, offering practical solutions and emotional support to cope with their loved one’s distressed behaviour.

Thank you!

Our Story

Saturday 18th Apr
Dad's story and the journey we are going on with him will resonate with so many of you. In 2023, when he fell down just one or two steps at home and fractured his neck, we had no idea that he was already quite advanced with both diseases (Alzheimer's and Vascular). He slept a lot and frequently missed family days out and celebrations because he didn't feel up to it, however we put that down to old age.
Dad was a force, opinionated and it was his way or the highway. If your view didn't match his he simply wouldn't listen. He was also kind, too sensible for his own good and doted on Connor, his grandson.
Mom did more than her best for him as his carer, she just didn't know what she was dealing with for such a long time, which was a failing on the part of the various medics involved.
In June last year he took himself on a stroll up the road at 3am to get petrol for a car he no longer had and it was fortunate that my husband, Garry and I had already been looking at the local care homes in advance.
It was the hardest decision to make, but although the worry never quite goes away - mom has some life back and can see the wood for the trees.
Connor and I are walking a mile a day for 31 days in May for everybody who has been affected, directly or otherwise, by Dementia. It's a people thief and such a cruel, tumultuous journey for all involved.
We have met some fabulous residents had the care home dad is in, all at various stages. If you watch closely, you can see the person they were. Whether they want to stack all the furniture, clean up imaginary dirt or tell you on a loop about their past job - the things that once formed the fabric of their lives still remain. My dad can still be obstinate and forthright at times, and that is absolutely who he was.
The important take home message from both Connor and I is that you are not alone if you are going through this. We're all in this together 🫶🏻
