Walk 50 Miles in January 2026

I'm walking 50 Miles in January for Dementia UK

This January, I'm walking 50 Miles and raising funds to help ensure no family faces dementia alone. I'm taking on the challenge for Dementia UK, the specialist dementia nursing charity, and would be grateful for your support.

Your donation, big or small, makes a difference. £33 could fund a new dementia specialist Admiral Nurse to spend an hour helping a family in the community, offering practical solutions and emotional support to cope with their loved one’s distressed behaviour.

Thank you!

Challenge complete

Saturday 31st Jan
It’s the last day of January and I have just finished my last walk of the month.
January 1st and my first walk of the month at Rutland Water seems a long time ago. There has only been one day in the entire month that I didn’t pull on my trainers or hiking boots and go for at least a mile’s walk.  It has been a great way to make me get outside in January and has helped with my mental as well as physical health. My final total was 81 miles walked, which is more than I even thought I might do!
Thank you to everyone who has sponsored me or joined me for a walk. You have all made a difference.

Week 4, last few days left

Wednesday 28th Jan
Week 4 and another 17 miles complete.
The week finished with me following Poppy around Coventry Memorial Park while she ran 2.3 miles cross country. It was quite muddy but at least the weather was sunny.
The weekend included two walks with Dave. The first at Seance Park and the second to Queensway and back.
Only 3 days to go and 76 miles completed so far.

Week 2

Thursday 15th Jan
Another 24 miles complete in week 2. Miles at the beginning of the week were around the village. The weekend saw me in London so lots of walking including a 2 mile trip to find a load of Snoopys around the Fleet Street area. Then a couple of treadmill walks at the end of this week.

January 2024

Thursday 1st Jan
Mum died in January 2024 for the last time. By that I mean that she actually died but I had been losing her for several years before then as dementia took her ability to be my Mum, her ability to do all the hobbies she loved and enjoyed, her ability to live independently, her ability to find the right words, the ability to look after herself……. The list goes on and on.
Dementia is a shocking and awful disease that we are not prepared for when it happens to a loved one. I struggled through the journey trying to work out how to deal with the changes in Mum with little the NHS could do to help. You stop being the child and start being the parent. You lose your life so you can be a carer for them.
When my Dad died of cancer it was awful and I still miss him everyday but I very quickly wanted to do some fundraising to get a cure for it and also make sure I was as healthy as I could be. It has taken me two years to get to the point where I am able to think about and am capable of doing fundraising to help people who are looking after their own loved ones with dementia. It took so much of me during that journey that I am only just refinding myself.
Please support me in this challenge in anyway you can. I will of course try and overachieve the 50 miles so if anyone wants to join me on a walk in January please do. Thank you.
