Walk 50 Miles in January 2026

I'm walking 50 Miles in January for Dementia UK

When I gave birth to Will in 2003 – the first grandchild - my Mother-In-Law Jackie said straight away that she wanted to be called Granny Jack. And so she is known as Granny Jack to all 8 grandchildren. As a retired primary school teacher, she was fantastic with her grandchildren whilst they were growing up, and was always playing games, singing, baking, going on adventures, and making everyday tasks fun. So very talented, she had a beautiful, neat garden, was a real force of energy when cleaning or tidying, and you always knew you would eat something delicious when Jackie was cooking.

Dementia has stolen her away from us. We are grieving the loss of our dear Jackie whilst she is still here; unable to do any of the things she used to love, stuck inside a shell of who she once was, and doesn’t recognise her loved ones anymore when they come to see her.

This January, I'm walking 50 Miles and raising funds to help ensure no family faces dementia alone. I'm taking on the challenge for Dementia UK, the specialist dementia nursing charity, and would be grateful for your support.

Your donation, big or small, makes a difference. £33 could fund a new dementia specialist Admiral Nurse to spend an hour helping a family in the community, offering practical solutions and emotional support to cope with their loved one’s distressed behaviour.

Thank you!

My Updates

17th January

Saturday 17th Jan
Being a weekend day, I took advantage of the clear weather and went walking  by The Ridgeway and Ashdown Park with my sister  while she is back for the weekend. We managed 6 miles, although it felt like more slipping along muddy tracks!
We were lucky enough to see a whole herd of  roe deer (some with massive antlers!) and a pair of buzzards overhead.

16th January

Friday 16th Jan
A brisk walk around the village whilst listening to an audiobook - 1.7 miles.

14th January

Friday 16th Jan
Only 1km (that’s only 0.6 of a mile) round the block in my lunch break- it’s all the time I could manage!

13th January

Tuesday 13th Jan
I am so bad at logging the walking that I’ve done! When it was the holidays I kept on top of it, but now term is in full flow…
So Saturday 11th I walked  2.2 miles.
Monday I went another 2.2 miles after work.
Today I managed 2 miles whilst I waited for Albert’s music lesson.

9th January

Saturday 10th Jan
Yesterday was such a cold miserable wet day, and I suddenly realised that I didn’t been out at all! I have to admit the rain was doing its worst and I let the evening go past without walking….
BUT
Today I managed to get out during my lunch break with Kelly and Megan and we walked 1 mile through the biting wind!!

7th January

Wednesday 7th Jan
It wasn’t so cold today, but by  the time I was home from work it was getting dark…
2.3 miles around the village where there were streetlights!

6th January

Tuesday 6th Jan
My colleague Kelly suggested a walk during our lunch break. So Kelly, Megan and I walked for about 1 mile in between marking and prepping for the afternoon!
I also topped up my efforts with another brief march round the block whilst waiting for Albert in his drum lesson. So about 2 miles covered today…

5th January

Monday 5th Jan
It didn’t get much above 0C today so I only walked 1 mile, stepping carefully between the ice  patches, and turned around when the lane got too dark to see!

4th January

Sunday 4th Jan
I realised today that my goal of 50 miles during January is going to be achieved only by doing little by little.
Still, it’s only  the 4th January and have walked 11 miles so far!
2.5 miles walked today until it got too dark!

3rd January

Saturday 3rd Jan
Urban walking  isn’t nearly as pleasant as rural walking in the country. Plus it’s hard on your feet after a few miles of tarmac…
Still, 5.4 miles today!

2nd January

Friday 2nd Jan
It’s SO cold and icy!
Only managed 2.1 miles on the pitch dark and icy ground! I’ll go tomorrow when the sun is shining!!

1st January

Thursday 1st Jan
I should have planned to start strong and with a big  kickstart walk…
1.7 miles around the village….
