Steps for Dad ... Miles of Hope

Hi All,

This September,  I am walking at least a  mile (or more) every day to raise money to support families facing Dementia.

Our father suffers from Dementia. He doesn’t recognise us anymore. When we call or visit, we try to remind him who we are — telling stories, mentioning names, showing photos — hoping that something will bring him back, even just for a moment.

But most of the time… there’s only that blank stare. To see someone you love look at you like you’re a stranger — it breaks your heart. And as painful as it is for us, we know it’s even harder for our mum — his carer, his wife, his constant. She’s with him every single day, loving him through the confusion, the frustration, the sadness. She’s 76, holding everything together even as the companion of her lifetime fades away.

He tries so hard to remember. We can see it — the effort, the confusion, the frustration. Maybe it’s too late for him. But we still hope. Hope that one day, we’ll find a cure. Hope that other families won’t have to go through this same pain.

So we are walking:
👣 For dad — who we miss, even though he’s still here.
👣 For mum — whose strength, love and patience leave us in awe.
👣 For every other family who’s losing someone they love, memory by memory.

If you can donate, no matter how small, thank you so much — every little bit helps and means more than you know.

And if you can’t, that’s absolutely okay too — even sharing this post means the world 💙

“I’ll live in your world, because you can’t live in mine.
Wish I could see the real you, one more time.
We’re all made of memories…
And we watch yours slip away, bit by bit, day by day.”

Steps that make a difference

Monday 8th Sep

I felt so proud walking in my Dementia UK t-shirt. It may not make much difference to my father’s severe dementia, but I hope this helps make a difference for someone else’s loved one. Every step was for him — and for the hope that others won’t have to face the same. This walk isn’t just about the miles. It’s about walking in honour of those living with dementia, the families who care for them, and the amazing work Dementia UK does to make sure no one faces this journey alone.

I won’t keep posting about donations - giving should come from the heart. If you feel moved by my walk and the cause, your support for Dementia UK will mean the world.

If you’d like to contribute, I hope it’s because you want to, not because you feel asked.
