I'm walking 30 miles in September

I’m walking 30 Miles in September and raising funds for families affected by dementia. I would be grateful for your support.

My lovely dad got vascular dementia after a stroke and is no longer with us.  My  lovely mum has Alzheimer’s which is deteriorating .

I have been very grateful for the support of Admiral nurses to help me make difficult decisions about their care, needs and behaviour.

An £8 donation could cover the telephone costs of two families seeking support through Dementia UK's free Helpline. £33 could fund an hour with a dementia specialist Admiral Nurse, helping a family with practical solutions and emotional support.

Thank you!

Last walk - I’ve completed the challenge!

Tuesday 30th Sep
For my last walk I thought it fitting to walk from my house to mum’s care home for a visit.  She was really pleased to see me and we reminisced through photos of her 90th birthday this time last year. Her birthday is this weekend so we will be celebrating with close family.  She’s changed a lot in the last year. She’s lost quite a bit of weight so we’ve had to sort through  her clothes for ones that fit. Mum can’t remember the different generations of the family and has no clue she has great grandchildren. She is now struggling to remember her grandchildren and cannot understand how they are related to her.  But she feels their love and warmth when they visit which gives her an emotional lift even if she doesn’t know why. The  club for the elderly she ran for about 10 years before giving up at 83 and which she now attends as a member, is a lost memory.
But, she is still mum with a big, caring heart for others and who  looks after her friends everyday at the home.  The care home  does a great job of looking after her and all the other residents , whose dementia presents in a whole variety of ways which can be challenging at times.  Admiral nurses have been a life line to me so thanks for all your support  and donations to help their work continue to help people like me, care for their loved ones. Together we can make a difference.

Penultimate walk

Tuesday 30th Sep
Today I forgot  My Fitbit  so have had to estimate my walk and being cautious I think I did 1.5 miles minimum. Went to our local park where Freddie chased squirrels the whole walk. Beautiful sunshine lighting up the anutumn trees and warm.

Windsor half marathon

Sunday 28th Sep
Don’t get too excited- it wasn’t me who ran it but my daughter!   I just went with the dog to meet her as she went over the finish line. Amazing achievement. Nice 2 mile walk in Windsor great park.

Holkham beach walk

Saturday 27th Sep
Last morning of our week away in fabulous Norfolk. Sunny and warm for our walk today on the coastal path beach. Dog loved the water, being chased by other dogs and running after his ball. Looking forward to seeing mum later and showing her all the photos. Might trigger some memories.  3.2 miles today

Another river walk

Friday 26th Sep
Met up with a good friend today and we did a 3.5 mile walk along the river in Downham Market.  Lovely to be so close to nature. Saw swans, an egret, cormorants and a kingfisher hiding in the reeds. The dog joined hubby for a run whilst we ladies enjoyed a natter and catch up. Her mum has Alzheimer’s too and so we often swap notes. She has been a great support to me especially over the last couple of years. No-one really understands what it’s like to watch your parent deteriorate in this way unless you’ve lived it. We talked about making memorable moments. Making them feel loved whilst with them that so improves their wellbeing and learning to let go of those days which aren’t so good.  Thanks Holly for journeying with me.

Local walk Hempton to Fakenham

Friday 26th Sep
Today we stayed local and walked from Hempton to Fakenham for market day. Bumped into several dog owners who also rescued spaniels and boxers. Lovely country market and then went on a river walk to wind our way back to Hempton, just yards from our front door.  Freddie well behaved in the coffee shop and stayed on lead so no muddy dog today! Did just over 2 miles.

Wells next the sea

Wednesday 24th Sep
Lovely coastal path walk today in the warm sunshine. Freddie loved running through the woods and managed to get muddy again!

Kings Lynn and Marham

Tuesday 23rd Sep
I went today to RAF Marham where dad was stationed for a few years at the start of their marriage. Great museum. Then went KingsLynn where we did a walk to include the Minster and the lovely park.  Dog got very muddy in a stagnant stream and we washed him off at the hand car wash in the car park!  Nice to walk through streets where mum and dad would have walked all those years ago. Did a 3.4 today.

Added extra!

Monday 22nd Sep
I did another 1.6 miles while waiting for hubby to finish a 7k run. Really lovely day.

Walking at Blickley Estate in Norfolk

Monday 22nd Sep
Went on a 1.9 mile walk and went a bit wrong so ended up being 3 miles! Never mind it was a great day.

Walking in Norfolk

Sunday 21st Sep
Did our first walks today. Took the dog to church and walked a mile. Then 2 more in Holt Country Park before a lovely Sunday lunch.

Very windy day!

Monday 15th Sep
Went for a bigger walk today spurred on by my generous sponsors. Did 3 miles on a dog walk in the autumn sunshine and  dodged a few showers. Remembering how sacrificially mum looked after dad and the toll it took on her own health. What carers need most are short breaks from caring responsibilities. To release that weight just for a few hours, to recharge.

My record of miles done

Sunday 14th Sep
I’ve done 17.95 miles so far so on target. Am hoping to increase my total on holiday in Norfolk doing lots of walks with Mike and Fred the dog.

Thank you to my Sponsors
