62 miles challenge in Oct in my mum name
Saturday 26th Sep
My mum was diagnosed with vascular dementia 4 years ago, after my dad passed away. It was a shock to everyone. For the last 26 years, I have been living in UK, with my husband and my children, while my mum and all my family live in Spain. Missing all my family terribly but especially my mum 💕 I am very close to my family, always talking to my parents every day on my dad's mobile and after he passed away with my sisters WhatsApp videocall.
After my dad passes away from cancer on July 2022, my older sister (who lived on the same village that my mum) starter noticing that my mum forgot to switch off the cooker, forgot her keys and even found random objects on the fridge. After so much persuasion from my sisters & me, she finally went to a Neurologist and confirmed her dementia diagnosis. She is taking medication to help the dementia to go very slowly. She is doing OK at the moment, living on her own in our family home, due to the help & support of my older sister and her personal career in the mornings, and during the weekends & holidays breaks my others sisters help too. We always go to visit my mum every holidays (sometimes Easter & Summer or Summer & Christmas) so I can looking after her and doing her favourite things with her (go with her for a walk with her lovely dog, playing spanish cards & bingo, mindfulness colouring books, cross words puzzles, talking about her childhood and her young life living in Madrid, and our family favourite conversations are listening to her talking about her 1 week holidays with my dad alone (visiting Spain, Portugal, France and Italy).
My parents have been in UK visiting us a lot of times, when my children were born, their baptism and we share family holidays here in UK and in Spain, especially last one in Benidorm in Easter 22 🙏Something that I really enjoy is when my son asking my mum to make "huevos con puntilla" (fried eggs with crispy, lacy edges) or any other tapas, she is a great cook. She was!😢 I learnt a lot from her, even how to prepare a whole fish, seafood and any meat from the beginning to the end 😋 Now my sisters are bringing her cooked food to heat on the microwave, so she can be independent as much as possible.
This summer was very intensive as we experienced the worst fire in the history of Spain. We arrived for our 10 days holidays one Wednesday and on Thursday night we were evacuated to the next village for 2 days We were able to come back home but we couldn't open the windows for 72 hours as the smoke was so thick and dangerous to breathe 😫
What I learn that life is to short and unpredictable, that we are here on Earth once, so we need to do good, enjoy every moment every day, even the annoying or silly ones because we don't know what brings tomorrow! So after this long blog, hope you are not snooze by now, I want to say thanks for reading this blog and for your donation. We can't beat dementia but we can help by donating any money, even a £1, to investigate a cure and to facilitate the help that our love ones need. Thank you from the bottom of my heart 💙🙏💕🥰
