I'm walking 60 Miles in June for Dementia UK

This June, I'm walking 60 Miles and raising funds to help ensure no family faces dementia alone. I'm taking on the challenge for Dementia UK, the specialist dementia nursing charity, and would be grateful for your support.

Your donation, big or small, makes a difference. £33 could fund a new dementia specialist Admiral Nurse to spend an hour helping a family in the community, offering practical solutions and emotional support to cope with their loved one’s distressed behaviour.

Thank you!

My first steps with dementia Uk

Sunday 24th May

I’ve recently downloaded the Dementia UK app, and I wanted to take a moment to write my first post about why I’m here and what I hope to learn.

Dementia is something that affects so many people and families across the UK, and I’ve seen enough through volunteering and everyday life to understand how important it is to approach it with patience, respect, and care ; even if you don’t fully understand it yet.

I’m currently a Lead Cadet and Cadet First Aider with St John Ambulance, and that’s played a big part in shaping how I see situations involving vulnerability. Even in simple interactions, I’ve learned that the way you speak to someone, and how you make them feel, can matter just as much as any practical help you give.

That’s part of why I’ve joined this space through Dementia UK  : I want to build a better understanding of dementia and how I can support people in a more informed and confident way.

At the moment, I’m still at the start of that journey. I’m here to learn, reflect, and hopefully grow in a way that helps me support others better in the future.

I’m especially interested in:

* Understanding what dementia is like day to day for individuals
* Learning how communication can be adapted to make things easier
* And recognising small things that can make a big difference to someone’s experience

I don’t expect to get everything right straight away, but I do think showing up and being willing to learn is a good place to start.

I’ll use this space to share what I’m picking up along the way and how it shapes the way I think about care and support.

This is just the beginning, but I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes
